Quite right - ETFs an option to consider inside SIPPs, there are also a number of advised SIPP providers for US residents, should the individual prefer an advised service rather than self manage...

I use Revulot, allows me to hold multiple currencies as well which is useful as i'm between the US and UK currently.

There are some UK SIPP options available for US residents. There are also options to invest into US listed assets and not be subject to the 30% withholding tax on US dividends and interest.
