Re: Topping up your National Insurance Contributions

Agree with the class 2 contributions being a great deal. Class 3 probably not so much. Freezing the pension rate is an awful con, but it can be reset by returning to the UK temporarily.

Things to...

Re: Tax residency in the British Virgin Islands

Yes.

I'm already travelling a lot, in my retirement I'll be travelling all the time. Nothing to manipulate, I'm living just the way you described already. Its actually how I prefer to live.

Re: Tax residency in the British Virgin Islands

I'm not sure why you think it doesn't work like that. Most countries have rules for tax residency.

For example, as a UK citizen, I moved to Australia. As soon as I had been there for 6 months, I...

Re: How "Australian" do you feel.

That is a good point. Yes, UK houses are considerably smaller and more expensive over there. For the same size, I can buy something here for a quarter of the price.

And yes, we are blessed with...

Re: Becoming an(other) expat....

If I had no income, I'd have a lot more important things to worry about than the taxman chasing me, yes!

Re: Becoming an(other) expat....

Unfortunately the rules are not as simple as they seem. People have been resident outside of Australia for years, and the ato had still demanded tax on their foreign income.

Tax on income in...

Tax residency in the British Virgin Islands

Can anyone tell me if it's relatively easy to get tax residency in the BVI? I read somewhere that you get it automatically after 3 months stay (and yes, I know you have to request to stay etc). I...

Re: Australian accents

I was going to mention that. In Mackay especially, they say "poowell" and I find it hilarious.

Overall, in my experience, most are rather similar. I've heard a few with the broad Croc Dundee...

Re: Becoming an(other) expat....

That's good to know, many thanks.

Although the residence rules are, quite deliberately, open to interpretation by the ato (the 'normally resident' 3rd condition), it is good to know that they...

Re: Topping up your National Insurance Contributions

I've told them I'm living where I am. They never asked for proof.

In future, I'll have the decidedly awkward position of having no fixed domicile. I will, in that case, tell them I'm resident in...

Re: Topping up your National Insurance Contributions

I'm not sure why you think I need to pay taxes there or use their health care to be considered a resident. Neither are true.

Ok, if you don't earn over £6k or are of a particular (very restricted) profession.

Thank you for the information.

Interesting position.

Re: Topping up your National Insurance Contributions

From what I've read recently, self employed can no longer pay class 2, only class 3. At least the HMRC website only allows you to select class 3.

If you know a way to pay class 2, please share......

Re: Topping up your National Insurance Contributions

It will be paid into my uk bank account.

Re: Becoming an(other) expat....

Not true, I'm afraid.

The ato will require tax paid on all worldwide income if they Regard you as resident for tax purposes.

They do not allow you to be non resident unless they agree....
