Here is my experience 2 years ago.

Arrived on L1 visa. Rent a car for 2 weeks.
Get SS number in 1 week. It should be your first task in US.

That's true. As long as you work hard and smart, you will be fine with salary. It's very competitive job market in bay area.

Welcome.
We moved to Bay area from Manchester 2 years ago. House/rent is very expensive, especially in SF. Food/dining cost is similar to UK, cheaper vegetables (the only thing my wife likes in US)....
