Re: Housing is too expensive

Well, I’m just going on what I’ve read on various websites. Assuming a typical mortgage would be repaid over 25 years, starting out at 50 would mean repaying until you’re 75. Perhaps if...

Re: Housing is too expensive

I’ve not heard of Japanese banks offering UK mortgages but I suppose it’s possible that they might, just not overtly. Worth looking into. Thanks!

Re: Housing is too expensive

Yes, that’s one of my regrets. I moved back to London because of familiarity and the job market but now that my kids are finally getting settled in at school they’d find the upheaval of another...

Question Housing is too expensive

Hi,

I lived in Tokyo until 2016 so I thought I was ready for the infamously high rents in London but how wrong I was! I'm renting a small three-bed home in the burbs and it's costing almost 23...

Re: Housing benefit entitlements

Well that’s odd. On my two visits I only got an X-ray scan and a bit of poking around inside my mouth for my £20. And the kids were definitely charged. Couldn’t believe their sealants weren’t...

Re: Housing benefit entitlements

Thanks. Those exceptions do sound reasonable/plausible but I wonder how the local authority would be able to confirm. I guess the burden of proof would be on me to show that that’s what I intend to...

Re: Housing benefit entitlements

Thanks for the input. I strongly suspect you’re right about the assets counting against me.
I don’t have private healthcare; I’m finding NHS dental treatment is expensive. A checkup alone...

Housing benefit entitlements

BACKGROUND
I've been back for 1 1/2 years now and - I won't lie - it's been a struggle. The rents here in London (can't even begin to contemplate buying) are astronomical even compared to Tokyo,...

Re: UK/JP dual nationality

A lot has happened since I last posted here. By the sound of things, I guess emigration from the UK might become more of an issue than immigration!

Anyway thanks again for all the helpful...

Re: UK/JP dual nationality

So if I've understood correctly, the idea would be to
1. Leave Japan and enter Britain on just my Japanese passport
2. Use my British passport for all travel thereafter, except
3. When returning...

Re: UK/JP dual nationality

Thank you for the comprehensive and insightful reply. I was not at all familiar with the CoE and it's disappointing to hear that it can't be awarded retroactively.
So anyhow, I should only use my...

Re: UK/JP dual nationality

Japan permits dual nationality up to the age of 21 or so. Then after that if you want to keep the Japanese one you are technically obliged to forfeit the other but in reality this rule is practically...

Re: UK/JP dual nationality

That wasn't the intention. Sorry. What I meant was, I became British by birthright. I was born in 1973 and my wife is Japanese. Thanks.

Re: UK/JP dual nationality

I was born British well before the Thatcher government rescinded citizenship by birthright. My wife is Japanese.

UK/JP dual nationality

Hi,

Dual nationality is normal in the UK but in Japan it's disallowed after (I think) the age of 21 - although I understand in practice the rule remains largely unenforced. Having lived in Japan...

Re: UK visa application process/cost for Japanese spouse

Thanks for the advice, and I don't think it's overly negative. You're totally right in that the more time I can budget for this process the safer it would be. However, time is a luxury I just don't...

Got it. Thanks for clearing that up. I just hope we can complete the visa application process in time.

Re: UK visa application process/cost for Japanese spouse

Thanks. You're right; that wouldn't make much sense. But then I wonder why there is this option to "Apply to remain in the UK with family". I read that as implying that someone already in the UK on...

Re: UK visa application process/cost for Japanese spouse

Thanks for the quick reply. Would you be able to point me to the page where it explicitly mentions this? I've been trawling through the gov.uk website but have so far not come across any such rule.

Question UK visa application process/cost for Japanese spouse

Hi,

First posting here. If it's a dupe, please kindly redirect me.

I'll be returning to the UK with my Japanese wife in a couple of months' time and I'm wondering how long it should take to...
