You may enjoy " The New Spaniards" John Hooper. written in the 1980s and it serves as a good insight into the evolution of Spanish society after the dictatorship. Not even sure it is still in print.

if you can spare the time drive around the airport to Faro beach - not busy this time of year- Several very nice restaurants to choose from.
It takes about 10 minutes from the airport entrance...

Agreed although you can get a Chave Movil without any problem at your local Loja do Cidadao it won't help unless you have a Portuguese mobile

If you click on the Globe in the top right corner you can change to english.
You will need your Utente Number and a Portuguese mobile number - they send a validation code...

Debit Card is excellent and well worth having , use it online no hassles and for shopping. Transfers often instantaneous and a good exchange rate . Just back from Buenos Aires trip and no issues...
