If you find a photographer who can upload your digital photo to the government site then you generally do not need a signature. The digital process removes the need for a countersignature.

I use Lloyds International in the Channel Islands and they are okay. I can only agree with Norm_uk about HSBC. I had a very negative experience with them.

If you have been out of the UK for 3 months or more, you are considered a non resident and not covered by the NHS anyway so you need to take out travel insurance when visiting the UK.
