Re: Chip + PIN in the US! I used it!

I've worked grocery retail in the US here for about 9 months.

We just got new, bugger touch screen card readers installed about 2 months ago, with a card slot that doesn't work yet. They tell us...

Re: Bacon - the thread

This will be a little limiting, but for expats on the West Coast, specifically in CA, Vegas and Metro Phoenix AZ, there exists a quaint little supermarket known as Fresh and Easy...

Re: Homesick....

I also think it's fashionable to hate on Birmingham in the same way Bill Bailey says that Anglaterre is the 'And finally' item on French news: it's poked fun at for the sake of it.

I have never...

Re: Homesick....

I used to think that one day I would miss living in Liverpool if I ever left, until it was happening; I don't miss the culture of a lot of people living there, but since I grew up there I started...

Re: Registering for "Bluebird" AmEx prepaid card without I-551/GC status

My wife had one before I applied, and though she had no history (no job or bank account til just last year), she has built it up rather quickly. She has a bridal store credit card, visa debit,...

Re: UK Foods in the US Share your finds!

*chimes in*

How has the Hershey/Cadbury situation affected you where you are?

There's a store named 'Fresh & Easy' near us in Mesa, AZ, and we can get British-made Cadbury chocolate (they have...

Re: Registering for "Bluebird" AmEx prepaid card without I-551/GC status

It's not a formal bank account. The online registration page asks for:

First name
Last name
Phone number
Email
Date of birth
Social security number

Is assumed they only want to check...

Re: Homesick....

I think it's important to get out there and integrate with the new culture you find yourself in, and since it's only for nine months, you should make the most of it!

I arrived here in October...

Registering for "Bluebird" AmEx prepaid card without I-551/GC status

This may well be answering my own question here, but a few months back, before we filed for the Adjustment of Status package (I-485), I bought a Bluebird card from Walmart.

For those who aren't...

Re: Imitating Our Accents

I'm from Liverpool but I speak with more of a generic northern accent that I think is akin to Chester, or well-spoken Liverpudlian.
I'm going to be 'branching out' by myself when I get approved for...

Re: What inside temperature do you like?

Am I confused? Whenever I look on my phone and it says it's 40°F at 6am it's time for a jacket! :P

Re: What inside temperature do you like?

Is it bizarre to not be able to deal in Celsius/Centigrade any more? I spent 26 years looking at BBC Weather reports in Celsius and knowing what 9°C feels like and whether I would need a jacket...

Re: Intolerance to US foods?

For me the alcohol hasn't been a problem, since it's something that just naturally curbed from my necessity to save - I did used to enjoy a good dark or spiced rum with Coke or Pepsi though, and am...

Re: Add yourself to the BE USA map

I count myself as 'new folk', along with my other half, so I've added a pin for us too. :)

Re: Intolerance to US foods?

I've been told to look out for a brand of Dr Pepper called Heritage which also uses cane sugar. If I remember rightly, the original recipe called for it and then had to be altered to use corn syrup...

Re: Intolerance to US foods?

I've definitely been taking it easy on the fizzy drinks since having the severe symptoms; I do have a penchant for Dr Pepper, and though I cut my teeth (gladly not literally) on the UK or 'heritage'...

Intolerance to US foods?

This is something I've been wondering about since I made the move here in October 2014, and hopefully it's just a transient thing that'll pass.

I've been coming over on visits from the UK to the...

Re: Imitating Our Accents

I've been coming here (Arizona) since 2012 and had a couple of 'interactions' like this - now I've moved here it still happens occasionally and it ranges from a compliment to cringey. I don't always...

I'm about to send in my DS-3025 from Knightsbridge Doctors with my AOS package too. Did you hear back yet? It's barely over a month, and during holiday season, but I'm anxious to see how this tends...

Smile I guess I'm a newbie.

...And it certainly doesn't feel like a novelty anymore - being new; emigration into a country with the same language but different cultures and dialects can feel like you're finding your feet all...
