Re: How popular if at all is the English accent in Canada?

No lol. I am going travelling a lot of the next two years and started a thread about the reception in Australia of accents and then it got me thinking about other countries that I plan to go too. :)

Re: How popular if at all is the English accent in Canada?

Isn't 'never popular' essentially the same thing?

Re: Where do the Brits live in Canada?

Hey, thanks for your direct response. The 2% figure was calculated from the link below. I think it works out as just under 2% to be exact. Interesting for the breakdown, I am surprised Toronto wasn't...

Where do the Brits live in Canada?

I was reading that just under 2% of the Canadian population is British. Where do they live? Are they mainly in the big cities like Toronto and Vancouver? If so, does that mean that 5% of the...

Re: The English accent...how popular (if at all) is it in the US?

True, although this may be cancelled out by tourists. :)

Re: The English accent...how popular (if at all) is it in the US?

An accent will get the ball rolling, I guess its my job to think of something to say that's interesting before the ball stops. :D I'd like to think I am reasonably attractive and interesting (then...

The English accent...how popular (if at all) is it in the US?

In Australia and New Zealand the English population is around 5%, so having an English accent is hardly novelty. However, the stats tell me that in the USA it is well under 1%, perhaps as low as 0.2%...

Re: Accents - Do New Zealanders like the British accent?

Well the results are highly divisive. However, if many people think it will be a large bonus, and are speaking from experience, then perhaps it depends on where you are in New Zealand. About 4-5% of...

Re: Accents - Do New Zealanders like the British accent?

There is, of course, no British accent. I just wanted to get responses from all of those living in the UK. :)

Accents - Do New Zealanders like the British accent?

I was posting in the Aussie forum a few days ago to see what people thought. Very few people thought it would make a difference, although some thought it might make a difference in areas where there...

Re: Questions for those who know Melbourne well...

Yes, it must be crazy in the USA. Something like just 1 in every 500 person is born in Britain. In Australia it's something like 1 in 20! That said, looking at the responses in this thread and other...

Re: Questions for those who know Melbourne well...

Indeed! Just to be clear I am not saying that everyone loves accents, no matter how sexy a foreigner may be. :D

Re: Questions for those who know Melbourne well...

To everyone (enough quoting people!)

I think my experience of accents depends entirely on the person. If they have a good personality and are attractive then the attraction increases even more!...

Hello Margaret,

Thank you for your response. :)

Glad you enjoy Australia and have made Aussies friends. Thanks for the tips on the Backpacker zones. It could be a good way of making friends,...

Re: Questions for those who know Melbourne well...

Yeah, it was just an anecdote from an Aussie, apologies for suggesting it had some evidence behind it. Who knows, maybe the Aussie just bumped into a British Backpackers meet up a couple of...

Re: Questions for those who know Melbourne well...

Hello Sarah, thank you for your response. :) Yes, I think just handing out CV's in different areas is certainly a good bet. You make a fair point about backpacker areas. Being with limited/no friends...

Re: Questions for those who know Melbourne well...

Wow. Looking at the demographics last night, I see Perth is around 10% British as a population as a whole, so I guess it isn't terribly surprising.

Thanks for this. Yes, I am sensitive to this...

Re: Questions for those who know Melbourne well...

Perhaps I was wrong for saying that as it was just an anecdote from somebody living in Sydney, who said some areas around the beach can be 15-20% British. So not at all based on any evidence. So I...

Re: Questions for those who know Melbourne well...

Hey, thanks for your response. A little confused though. When you say that it doesn't stand out, is that because it is common or rare?

Re: Questions for those who know Melbourne well...

Ah, I see. No getting away from them then. :D So actually living in Melbourne how common is it to hear a Brit accent? Does 4% sound about right?
