Re: Claiming Irish citizenship post-Brexit

Oh... okay! Yes, my father was born in Liverpool. Of course, it now makes sense that he's already a citizen without a passport. This is amazing! Thanks for your help. I'd looked through all the...

Claiming Irish citizenship post-Brexit

Hi!

Yes... I'm another of those people. My granddad was born in Ireland, so my father and I are (hopefully) going to claim Irish citizenship and passports via descent. It would be very useful to...

Re: Moving into an apartment without viewing

You've got it. I'm not going to be spending much time there. I won't invite people around often.

I think I'm about to sign for this place. The guy wouldn't negotiate a shorter-term lease, and I'm...

Re: Moving into an apartment without viewing

Interesting. I was using email as an initial approach and then moving onto phoning them once I'd had some sort of confirmation their places existed. I definitely did get a lot faster answers by phone...

Re: Moving into an apartment without viewing

I think I've picked my top place now! Thanks for your help; a labmate is going to look at it some time soon. I'm so invested in this one place now that I really hope it works out! It's 14 mins' walk...

Re: Moving into an apartment without viewing

I forgot all about online reviews. They will be super useful, I'm sure. I already heard comments from two previous renters of a place on a local forum! Very reassuring to hear their good comments....

Re: Moving into an apartment without viewing

I have to say you guys are almost certainly correct that that's the way to go... I have been thinking about it, but since all my friends work the same crazy job as me, I'm not sure anyone would...

Moving into an apartment without viewing

Hi!

I'm just asking your thoughts, because I'm a little scared about this. I have to find a new apartment over in Illinois, by the time I get back there in August. I will get back and straight...

Re: Where in USA is most like UK?!

Haha :) I really would agree it's usually a bad way to go. However, people here (profs, administrators... me) are all for it this time around.

Some leads, re: postdocs (nothing too official). I...

Re: Where in USA is most like UK?!

Actually... no. Purely a lab research-based decision :)

I agree with all or most of your points, including the one about it's generally a bad idea to take time off. This is why I didn't do this...

Re: Where in USA is most like UK?!

Sigh, not a postdoc, but an early stage grad student. Who definitely does not get the summer off! :p I just have to go and work something out, haha. Hope it won't take too long. I imagine I'll go...

Re: Where in USA is most like UK?!

Well, I'm on a visa but at my institution there are two different time off paths I can follow, and I'm not sure which yet. Time off is certain to happen, but there's a chance time off will have to be...

Re: Where in USA is most like UK?!

Yes, what I'm trying to say with the stereotype thing was trying to be polite without saying the whole "guns and racism, hell yeeeeeah!" idea. I have no desire to generalize an entire place on a...

Re: Where in USA is most like UK?!

@Sally Chemistry. And I love your userpic!

I just realized that I don't know if there's some way I can get access to libraries of other universities like you can in the UK...? I just looked at my...

Re: Where in USA is most like UK?!

I've always liked the sound of Boston! Probably pricey, but perhaps I can manage somewhere nearby. There's also a major conference in my field coming up in Boston, and I've been thinking how great it...

Re: How "Foreign" is the USA ?

The different races not mixing thing happens here too. It took me months to notice it, until one day I saw a group of giggling girls hanging out, and something in the back of my mind said "huh, those...

Re: US or UK? Our next move

I teach US college (university) students. They are very different from UK uni students! It probably depends on which state you're in, but at least here in Illinois, I think many public school...

Question Where in USA is most like UK?!

Hi everyone!

I'm taking some time off work soon for "personal reasons", which aren't my fault. I have to take probably a few months off. I don't know yet whether I can stay in the USA in the...
