Re: What do you appreciate most about your life right now

Thanks! And oh, of course, nowhere is perfect, and we take ourselves with us wherever we travel :)

I miss the clear skies, the ocean and wild swimming. I miss proper sushi. I miss the cleanliness...

Re: What do you appreciate most about your life right now

Living in a stone house, in a village that is mostly hundreds of years old. Footpaths and access to the countryside - with my dog. Churches. Stately homes. Having an intelligent conversation....

Re: Any regrets about moving back to the UK?

Ahhh, thanks for reminding me - must have some today. I make it with ice (obviously), espresso and soy milk, and maybe a dash of maple syrup if I'm feeling decadent. Better and cheaper than...

Re: Any regrets about moving back to the UK?

Still no regrets here - it's a bit like not having kids, people constantly saying "ooh you'll regret it...." - errr, nope :D

Loving living in my tiny cave-like stone cottage, messy garden stuffed...

re: Any regrets about moving back to the UK?

Regrets? None. This was brought home to me last week, sitting under an umbrella in the rain at the local "proms" concert, in a stunning garden. So classically, quintessentially british, no screaming...

Re: Transporting Dog through Europe

We did it at Hoek van Holland ferry terminal; they were very efficient and quick. When we got to the UK we walked straight through.

Re: Transporting Dog through Europe

train to Hoek van Holland, then Stena Line ferry for us, but of course there are endless permutations.

Re: Transporting Dog through Europe

Agreed in principle BUT for my little dog this was the least stressful way - flying and airports cut to a minimum, and he enjoyed the social aspects of the remaining public transport bits. I, on the...

Re: Transporting Dog through Europe

Yes - we flew into Amsterdam then took trains and ferry to UK. It was quite hard work but a special experience, will never forget sitting little dog on my lap on the last leg of the train journey and...

Re: 15 month update and life ROCKS

Derbyshire, and yes I lived there before for a few years. Chosen for proximity to rellies rather than on its own merits, but I'm surprised at how much more I appreciate it now than I ever did then.

Me neither, but clearly it's a "thing". Look, you can get badges for it:

Re: Go back after 15+ years?

Sadly there is plenty of toxic food available here too, and so much junk it's unreal. I'm mesmerised by the complete train wreck that is the standard family's shopping trolley in the supermarket...

15 month update and life ROCKS

What a wonderful year and a quarter it's been. Not constant perfection, but overall just brilliant. Two house moves (got it absolutely right second time, we won't talk about the first ), a new...

Re: What to take back - What's cheaper in US than UK

By eck, we seem to have moved back to under fives. This person stands NO chance integrating into UK life with zero sense of humour.

Just off to knock up a sandwich

Re: Go back after 15+ years?

Umm, you just insulted the whole of the UK and everyone on this forum  but I'll try not to take it personally ;)

Two things spring to mind:

1 - Visit. It's an easy trip, and the only way...

Re: Renting a property in the UK without a job?

Leaving without giving notice, even at the end of a six month tenancy, is not advisable. Something to do with the implied rollover to a month-to-month contract, and if the owners/agents are not...

Re: Over 40's Moving Back and Catching Up

Re: Renting a property in the UK without a job?

Yes, when I first arrived back. Had to provide proof of some form of income and/or savings, lack of job not an issue though I had to pay the first two months up front. Good luck!

Re: Pet fees upon landing in UK

Too dangerously hot to fly pets out of Denver at the moment. Any responsible airline would also have an embargo in this weather!

Re: Over 40's Moving Back and Catching Up

Nope, mine was way out of date too, and the most recent trip I had dog with me. No worries, the people who work border control have a good feel of who's genuine and who's not - they have to have!...

Re: Over 40's Moving Back and Catching Up

Quick note on entering the UK with a valid overseas passport and an expired UK one - I've done this more than once and never had problems. The only downside is having to wait in the (slowwwww)...
