Just a thought. Why don't you buy an inexpensive small holiday home in France first and see how you feel living there for extended periods? Go as often as you can and live there, not just holiday...

Thank you both for your suggestions regarding rental.
I had considered this, but as it it only a very small property I think holiday rentals might work more than a long tern let.
