Re: Converting Aussie salary to British pounds

I think you should use a long term average exchange rate of about 2.2 and then apply any factors for cost of living differeneces on top of that.

It is only recently that the exhange rate has been...

Re: Converting Aussie salary to British pounds

The 2.2 exchange rate and also the 1.5 multipler on average salary seems like a good number to work with for me.

However I'd also take into account:
- house/apartment prices in outer suburbs may...

Re: Shipping a car, Pros & Cons

Grey market imports are obviously lower priced than local distributor/wholesaler imports, but you have to consider that Australian car prices have no basis in reality whatsoever and if you don't...

Re: Shipping a car, Pros & Cons

So anyway, if UK cars have "no resale value", I'm thinking of importing what would be in Australia a $110,000 BMW.

What would be a fair sale price if I sold it in Oz? $11.50? Should I pay someone...

Re: Shipping a car, Pros & Cons

I keep hearing this "UK cars have no resale value"

If UK cars have no resale value, why can you be asked to cough up A$70,000 for a UK import Maserati if you go to Rick Damelian in Sydney?

Re: PERTH

This may or may not be true, however OTT policing can be a worldwide phenomenon and police failing to adequately follow "minor" crimes like break-and-enter can also be a worldwide phenomenon.

Re: Shipping a car, Pros & Cons

Compliance does not seem to be a problem, at least in Western Australia, on my understanding following correspondence with licencing in WA.

They are happy with a speedo in mph as long as it has...

Re: PERTH

I agree that Oz driving standars are overall.... not that good, however compared to driving in the UK, it is still a lot easier in Oz. Simply because there is less traffic and less small carparks....

Re: Shipping a car, Pros & Cons

I'm sure it does lose a lot of value. But with jacked-up-into-oblivion Oz new car prices and correspondingly high used car prices even if a personal import loses 30% of the value compared to an...

Re: Shipping a car, Pros & Cons

AFAIK that model (ie a diesel version) is not sold in Oz, in which case parts could be a problem.

You will have to pay:
5% tarriff on the customs value
10% GST on the customs value

There is...

Re: Renting out UK property while in Oz

If it really is a matter of 10k - which isn't much in the scheme of buying or selling a house - then how much is it costing you in interest payments by having a large loan you are paying off? Or if...

Re: Selling UK house (with tennants) from Oz

I've sold a house in Australia, while overseas, which had tenants in it.

The dynamics will be similar although specific laws will be different.

IMHO good tenants can ADD to the sale price....

Re: Buying House in UK from Oz

- You cannot negatively gear overseas property and write off any losses against your Oz tax.
- You won't be able to get a loan off an Oz bank as the property is in a different legal juristiction.
-...

Re: Personal import of a car into Australia

Isn't that a SUV with over 200mm ground clearance?

As an FYI passenger vehicles with over 200mm ground clearance or meeting 4 out of 5 bizarre criteria (ie your typical 4WD/SUV) are treated...

I got on the phone to HSBC because of one of their many screw ups and the useless HSBC...

What type of car are you shipping, Alfresco?

ISOFIX were specifically mentioned by WA Licencing as being OK when we talked about child restraints.

LHD Japanese import? Why would a Japanese car be LHD? If it really was left-hand-drive I'm not suprised nobody would buy them.

Re: I am seriously p*ss*d off with HSBC

Re: Personal import of a car into Australia

I'm sure they do have less resale value - but the car in question costs over $100,000 in Oz vs err about 1/3 less in UK so I can eat a lower reasale value compared to an Oz model imported the normal...

Re: Can we Import Car from USA to AUS?

Import tariff 5%
GST 10%
Luxury Car Tax 33%
Stamp duty about 5%

In addition to all of that, the premium auto makers in Australia eg BMW, Mercedes also jack up the price to levels above what can...

Re: Salary in Sydney. Ok or not?

You mean $8k/month AFTER tax? That's significantly above the average income in Australia, the UK or any other developed country for that matter.

If you can't live on that, there's something...
