We have about 6 weeks to figure it out since that is when his visa expires.

So we have since discovered that you can apply for an extension of you validity period in extenuating circumstances..... which I'd these times qualify as!

Haven't exactly figured out how to apply...

Since most infections are spreading locally i think that the international travel bans are basically shutting the barn door after the horse has already bolted.

So for others coming to this thread, i read the ban in more detail and it says that it applies to people who have been in the banned countries 14 days prior to arriving in the US.

So an option may...

Thanks for the response.

I should have added more information that now seems relevant.

Though he is a UK citizen, he lives in South Africa and SA is not one of the countries currently banned...

I think they can just send a cheque to you child for the amount in the account.

Probably best to have cancelled the DD anyway as you'd probably end up breaching the $10,000 limit at some point,...

Unfortunately not, its locked up until my son turns 18.

As for calling it a trust, well that was just marketing speak, so you're right about nothing to worry about there.

I have searched high and low for some straight forward advice on this and haven't got very far.

My son has around $3,000 left in a Child Trust Fund in the UK. (We moved to the USA 2 years ago)

Also, if you only arrived in the USA last year, then according to the definition on the instructions for form 8938 you will be a foriegn person as you would have spent 330 days outside of the USA...

perhaps a fairer system would allow people to take pension accounts in the uk and withdraw all the cash, with a penalty, so that they can then take the money where they please.

you are right. i took another look and they talk about the schemes being FATCA compliant.

if they were moving the money to the US then FATCA wouldn't be an issue.

I have decided to do just that. They were all defined contribution schemes that my accountant (and some-one at H&R Block) all agree cannot be transferred to the US, and should just be left in the UK...

lets say the average pension pot left in the UK is about $100,000, for some people it may be in the millions.

what about a mid transfer? like going from UK to ??? to USA

would probably lose a bit of money in transfer fees but possibly an option?

I am already here on a green card.

My wife is a USC.

And I am only 35 so quite a while to go until retirement, would just rather not have to worry about FBAR, etc for the next 30 years and then...
