Re: Why are IT salaries in OZ so less(Comparitively)

I would say some quality food prices (e.g. meat, veg) are a bit cheaper in Aus than in the US, but you need to know where to go. But you're right very little else.

The standard of living in the US...

Re: The Great Australian Property Swindle

As its net lending, it obviously takes account of mortgages being repayed (exactly how, I'm not sure). But there was at least one period post-GFC where a lender or the country as a whole, was paying...

Re: The Great Australian Property Swindle

Right, house price inflation is credit-driven. No credit, no price growth.

I agree that its an incredible reduction but if you turn off the tap of new loans, which is what they've been doing, then...

Re: The Great Australian Property Swindle

It wasnt a bailout, but it was far, far from a precautionary measure. The lack of overseas funding was not due to the collapse of overseas banks, it was due to the credit crunch, which caused many...

Re: Why are IT salaries in OZ so less(Comparitively)

I've just spent come from the UK though, and I certainly know what I was getting paid there v US and Aus for example :-) And given it was part of the salary structure of a large global company I'd...

Re: Why are IT salaries in OZ so less(Comparitively)

I work in this field (less technical perhaps) and have lived in the UK, US and Aus.

As a really general rule, the US pays the best salaries, across the board (ie not just IT). Technical competence...

Re: 3 bed room house in Melbourne. Maintain it or sell it?

Your theory is good, but your timing could be wrong :-)

Whether you personally agree or not, there are a lot of commentators on both sides of the debate agreeing that Melbourne has a coming...

Re: The Great Australian Property Swindle

I wasn't talking about Chinese in Melbourne, I was talking about Chinese in China.

Re: The Great Australian Property Swindle

In the case of the Chinese empty-property story, there's a couple of explanations out there -

1) There is tremendous excess credit in China, even more so than Aus for example. This is pouring...

Re: Has the Australian dream lost its sparkle................anyone???

I'm sorry, what? "4 seasons in one day and all that?"

sjz - I agree that UK period properties are very nice to look at. However, they don't adapt well, and generally it costs a lot to fit them...

Re: Has the Australian dream lost its sparkle................anyone???

Very good point. IMO properties here are much better than the UK, similar to the US for example. Much more living space, better facilities (laundry rooms, garage, decks etc).

Re: Has the Australian dream lost its sparkle................anyone???

My own perspective as a recent arrival -

The price of the Aussie dream has gone up a lot over the last few years. Take this example. In 2006, for example, lets say the GBP bought you 2.2AUD. You...

Re: The Great Australian Property Swindle

Vash: "The US property crash saw price dropping more than 14% in a single month (not a quarter). Perth's decline is not even close to that."

If thats true, I think it must be in the real...

Re: The Great Australian Property Swindle

If anyone's still in any doubt as to how bad a situation Australia has got itself into here, I'd recommend reading Steve Keens response to the banking competition enquiry:

"The Australian...

Re: The Reserve Bank has increased interest rates...

The banks are in a very 'interesting' position... much of their profit comes from mortgage lending. Most of them have about 50-60% of their loan book in mortgages.

They need the Aussie battler to...

Re: The Reserve Bank has increased interest rates...

OK, a bailout is maybe stretching it, they didn't have to buy up toxic assets in the way the US and UK govts did. However, without a funding guarantee the banks stood a very good chance of going...

Re: The Reserve Bank has increased interest rates...

I would hope most informed observers would know that the banks are not the pillar of strength they were made out to be - only a deposit guarantee and wholesale funding guarantee at the height of the...

Re: 1.93's A$ to the Pound!!!

Not good to do nothing, but when you're in a hole why dig? The UK was not at risk of being downgraded like a Greece or Ireland. They could have made some targeted cuts, and added a stimulative...
