Re: Lifestyle Newcastle

Depends on where you're going to live. If you life in Newcastle, depending on the time you travel, you'd look at 30-40 mins to the Airport. There's not much out a Williamtown apart from the airport...

Re: Tax returns 2015

Took a bit to find, but here's a link to 2015 etax - https://www.ato.gov.au/Individuals/Ind/Downloading-and-installing-e-tax/

We also can't use MyTax as it doesn't include all necessary fields...

Re: Do I need to pay for an RRV when I have been approved for citizenship?

Thanks for that. A pain in the behind that we have to pay more money for visas, despite the fact it being called a "permanent visa" would somehow imply that the visa was in fact permanent, due to...

Do I need to pay for an RRV when I have been approved for citizenship?

I applied for citizenship on 28/07/2014. I sat my test on 16/09/2014 and finally received approval on 20/10/2014. Since then I've been waiting for a citizenship ceremony. The next one at our local...

Re: Benefits that can be claimed on Contributory parent visa

Oh :( That's a pity, but sounds in line with the rest of the benefits schemes. Not sure what the $90K they paid to Centrelink gets them exactly.

Re: Benefits that can be claimed on Contributory parent visa

Same with my parents. They don't seem to be entitled to a pensioners card, as the fact they are receiving an Irish pension doesn't count. You apparently only receive this card if you are receiving an...

Re: Return of bond - timescale

Not sure how they can come back and claim issues after the final inspection?!
Also, re-sealing is something that the property owner (estate agent) should take care of, not you! Surely that comes...

Re: How to transfer money from the UK

I registered with OzForex and HiFx a good period of time before I was ready to transfer and then watched the rates on both. Don't bother looking at the "indicative" rates given on any of the Forex...

Re: Moving from Munich Germany to Melbourne

Lived in both cities for a number of years and loved both.

Similarities
- Fantastic inner city with great restaurants/bars nightlife
- Lovely scenery on your doorstep (Melb has the Yarra Valley,...

Re: UK tv not working!!!

Get a digital box which will decode the local digital channel. We couldn't use our Samsung tv (bought in Ireland) here either. Bought a digital box and now get all the channels. Saves buying a new tv!

Re: Abuse of Australian citizenship ?

I really don't see the OP's pov at all. I applied for "permanent residence" which turns out is only permanent if I don't actually leave the country (a farce imho). No matter how many years I reside...

Hmmm ... have you considered that on top of getting an apartment that you'll have to sort out a landline and an internet connection? These will definitely take longer than 3 days to complete. You may...

Re: Any Tax Deduction tips???

Last year it was worth paying your annual health insurance subscription in advance as the tax rebate levels were dropping. Is there any advantage to paying your year in advance by June 30 (i.e....

Re: Contributory Parent Visa - Part 5 - Visa/Immigration queries only please!!

Fantastic news! I thought you had to use the rates as per the Immi website which are dismal. Thanks so much!!

Re: Contributory Parent Visa - Part 5 - Visa/Immigration queries only please!!

Just wondering, so the exchange rates for paying your AUD fees are set twice a year (Jan & Jul). The EUR-AUD rate has dropped significantly in the past weeks so I'd imagine the rate come 1st July...

Re: Aussie Dollar continues to fall - £1 buys $1.66

Yeah that part had me confused too. I've been watching the EUR->AUD conversion rates for the past year as I want to transfer savings over. The rate is at its best in nearly 2 years, but still,...

Re: Why are we paying for private health insurance?

I used a dentist from my PHI's list, and despite this they only paid a part sum. I'm not sure which (if any) dentists they'd actually pay more for.

I have attended this wrist surgeon as he is...

Re: Why are we paying for private health insurance?

Agreed - I don't understand the system at all. The government encourage (via taxes) you to buy PHI, but then you are better off not using it, so Medicare pays more. Why not have us pay more to...

Re: Why are we paying for private health insurance?

I don't think the 25% is particular to AHM. It seems that Medicare pay 75% of the scheduled fee according to the MBS, and your fund pays the rest (i.e. 25%). Given that the MBS fee is heaps lower...

Re: Why are we paying for private health insurance?

Yeah that includes Extras (basic) with AHM. We haven't got much benefit out of the extras so I reckon we'll drop that next year. So far I got $17 off a physio appt ($70 fee), same for an acupuncture...

Re: Why are we paying for private health insurance?

Cheers for the advice folks.

I completely understand going for private treatment vs public treatment, but what's confusing me is as to why you'd pay private health insurance to do this rather...

Re: Contributory Parent Visa - Part 5 - Visa/Immigration queries only please!!

My parents are 65, so waiting 15+ years for the 103/804 visa would put them at 80, so I don't really think it's a viable option. My father has just retired, and they are now enjoying their first...
