One minor error, which doesn't really detract from the point he is making (eg: Dubai has no culture. All glitz, no culture).
He's writing a throwaway, fun to read opinion piece. 100% factual accuracy is not going to (in my opinion) destroy the jist of the whole piece.
As for the 70%...I'd say I was being conservative.

If you don't mind...indulge me further, what is your definition of culture?
So if you are right and its upwards of 70% then the chances are that you are one of these peoples the hack describes? deeply unethical, uncultured and without taste?

Whether you define it as classical culture, politcs, wine, travel, food, art, music, films or just being interested in local and Arab tradition and history.
I think I would consider myself cultured.
Not incredibly cultured or anything, but I certainly have interests that I would consider cultured by many definitions. An all rounder with no particular specialism or field of excellence

Not THE most cultured, but I certainly have interests that I would consider cultured. An all rounder with no particular specialism

Its only 37 years old fgs,
Yes I would consider you cultured.I would consider every poster on here as cultured in the terms you are applying. What are your parameters please?
You say you are not 'the most' cultured. On a scale of 1-10 and as a resident Dubaiite where do you sit? What personal interests do you have which you consider qualify you as cultured?
Sorry if this annoys you, I prefer good debate over shopping malls

Re: Why I'd rather die than visit Dubai
A country does not have to be old to have traditions...they do have them in Dubai. It's just they don't promote them (because glitz and glamour is more important) and the people that come here don't care anyway.
Hmm I don't know how to define it. I prefer to define what is not culture(shopping, getting drunk, driving fast cars, eating junk food...)
...shall I give a list of things I have done this year that I consider cultured??
