The odd bit of exercise thrown in as well helps.

that said go for it, i'll do it one day but in a car or buggy. no way i'm going near it on a bike!

Yeah the entry costs when I looked at it were huge, it must have been 13,000 euro just to enter and then all the bike and support costs.
However I am (or was) cocky enough to back myself to do it in less attempts than that, I have done ISDE, South American and Asian cross country races before so I have a fair idea of the determination needed (plus a lot of luck).

I think there are too many middle standard guys in the event which skews the finishers rate, the year I wanted to do it I entered a Fast Eddy event in Oxford and remember lapping the ironically named Patsy Quick (who was considered to be a good rider entered in the Dakar) about 5 times in a 3 hour race.

I know Patsy, first british woman to ever finish Dakar, but fast doesnt finish Dakar, getting home every night in time to get some sleep finishes dakar!

you should do the desert challenge here as a warm up. more than a few dakar guys here for it every year including a few uae locals/expats now

That was a bit harsh on her from me, she is obviously a very talented rider and has achieved what I am aspiring to, I was just very surprised that day at her speed. Considering Paul Edmonson went past me a few times at what seemed like warp speed.

Increase your "good" fat intake and exercise occasionally (if you don't already)

Fuel your body with fat, it will become efficient at burning it

No probs but in the big cross country events you can be fast for a few days or finish the event! Maybe 20 guys in the world can consistently do both

edit: i should point out i spend every desert challenge sending helicopters to guys who try to do both and have had a nasty off as a result.
