I appreciate we're richer and better off than most but are 3billion people really illiterate? Population is ever increasing, people are living longer...and they all desperately poor and needy or perhaps they just don't have internet (which might be good with all the terrible spelling we already have ) and access to overpriced labeled goods they don't really need?

Just a thought...will try not to have any more this week as I'm already tired.

See this map:

The 3 most populous countries have fairly high literacy rates, 75% for India and 96% for China, 92% for Indonesia, so they must be spread around quite a bit. 3 Billion seems over the top to me...

Finer details aside, it is still something that makes you think....which was probably the point.

another thing to make you think - having just come back from Egypt during election time - what a stark contrast there is between the UK, say, where people can't be bothered to go and vote and those who have either just fought to be able to for the first time in their lives or who are still unable to have a say in their own governance but would jump at the opportunity.

I can feel a few ranting lectures coming on to apathetic voters when I'm back in the UK!

similarly to iraq, where the electorate turned out in massive numbers to vote despite eh promises of terrorists to shoot anyone they saw outside their home on that day. they did actually commit several dozen -if not hundred- acts of terrorism that didn't make the news. iraqis still voted in defiance of the terrorist threat to show they rejected saddam. truly heroic.

(yeah, I was involved in securing election stations)

compared to the uk where big brother voting outnumbered that in the general election...
