The quicker the plaster gets ripped off the better. The hole it leaves is almost impossible to plug but it'll serve the morons right.

Algebra.

Calligraphy.

Chess. It didn't originate there, but it did get imported into Europe from there.

Be careful with that assumption; my industry, for instance, pays more elsewhere than in the Gulf . . . and the Dubai "Golden Age" has been over for about a decade.

People go there for a lot of different reasons. I went because I like Arab culture, art and food, and so when my work interests allowed it, I went there and stayed several years. But that is not a common reason why people go there.

Some go for the money, if they are in an industry where the Gulf pays more.

Some go as a "last job" to top up the retirement fund.

Some go because they view it as a way to break monotony and a chance to travel abroad.

Some go because they are Western Muslims and think being in the Middle East will provide them with a kind of spiritual cleanse.

Some go because they got fired or ran into career difficulties, and they need a second chance or a fresh start but are in the penalty box back home.

Some go because they are misfits who don't fit in anywhere else.

It is a real mixed bag of allsorts and doesn't fit stereotypes very well.

And in fairness, on the numbers thing, and in many other areas of science and art, they did take things quite a way forwards from what the Indians had come up with during the golden decades of the Abbasid caliphate.

You forgot to mention the delicious sweets, pastries, dates.

Who was making assumptions or stereotyping? I was simply giving another possible answer to the question 'what have the Arabs ever done for us', one that hadn't been mentioned yet.

I don't disagree but, like a few other Eastern Med/Levantine delicacies, there is a range of cultures that might legitimately claim it as their own, taking in pretty much everywhere between
Greece and Persia...

It probably is, for people who don't love it. You couldn't rate it highly enough for me.
