Ah, this makes sense. Maybe they fit bigger AC compressors also sapping more hp. The history thing is a good point too. Wonder if GCC is a dumping ground for rebuilt wrecks. That particular car says its a dealer selling it so would expect full dealer backup.

Yeah, its generally a larger AC unit, larger (or the addition of an) oil cooler, different coolant (which often requires different gasket materials), occasionally no under seal etc etc.

It obviously ranges from bugger all on some cars to quite a lot on others. Definitely worth doing the research.

I spent some time working in Xi'an, few years back now but having been to about 100 Chinese cities, no joke, it's a fascinating place. Be sure to prep for a whole day at the terracotta warriors place and then another half day for the museum in the city, so much stuff that has been moved there from the site.

It was a fun city at night too but I had a half dozen Chinese girls take me round all the cool drinkun n eatun places.

p.s. I don't fix planes either, I fix airports.

I love airports. Have been a controlling shareholder in one, and developed two.

Me too. I love the sense of possibilities in airports. Reading the departures/arrivals screens at a place like DXB is fascinating. Who are all these people and where are they going?

Do you have a favourite airport?

Me too. I like watching the people too. Scumbags the lot of them.

I liked Changi a lot.
Dubai is hard to beat T3 because of it's options available I think.
Koh Samui was really cool. In fact, it was sick.

The list of shit airports is far easier.

I have to admit I am like a little kid at airports, I never tire of them for all the above reasons.

Worst Airport....Dhaka Bangladesh

Shittiest Airport.....Nyala, Darfur, Sudan

Most Dangerous, Baghdad back in 2003/4

Most liked Singapore or Beijing

Not normally. A lot of bollocks is talked about "Gulf spec", when all it actually means officially is that the writing on the side mirrors is in Arabic and some kind of alarm goes off at 120km/h. Without that, it's illegal to import brand-new cars into the UAE.

The Gulf isn't a uniquely harsh environment for cars, there are many other markets where the summer climate is the same or worse - think the south-western USA, Australia, many parts of Africa, India etc. Manufacturers go to great lengths to ensure their cars can work pretty much anywhere in the world without needing to make costly market-specific revisions.

It's a 99.99% certainty that the Gulf spec version of any given car will have the exact same radiator, oil cooler, AC etc as the same model everywhere else in the world. You can confirm that just by looking at the parts catalogue for your vehicle - bet you anything you won't see any country- or region-specific cooling system parts, beyond stuff that needs to be a different shape or orientation to account for differences in engine bay layout for LHD and RHD.

Beyond the legal stuff needed for importing, Gulf spec really just refers to the interior trim and other disposable toys.
