Weekend plans?

What are you all doing this weekend? Come five today I imagine there's a stampede to the favourite watering holes for a few pints or drinks?

Just ringing round to see who's going to be at my watering hole by 3-4pm. Had enough for this week.:lol:

It's the other half's birthday today so probably going out tomorrow night, don't know where to though. Might give the new Jebel Ali Club a try.

Wish it was last weekend. He surprised me with a meal and drinks on Bateaux Dubai. I'm a very lucky lady :)

Takeaway, beer and box set binge tonight. Take the kids to the pool tomorrow (literally not the euphemism), park or play centre on Saturday. Rock and roll.

Last weekend was good. Oktoberfest at the Intercontinental in Doha, lotsa beer, lotsa food, lotsa people, lotsa fun. Stayed at the Intercon overnight so a nice room and great breakfast the next day. Good weekend by Doha standards. This weekend will be just lazy and quiet but will likely involve tv, red wine, sushi. Likely a few other bits n bobs as well :p

Had to do a lot of driving yesterday, over 4 hours of it and most of it was the sh**ty kind of bumper to bumper on SZR at 5pm no less (whats the bloody use of a 5 lane road if its nothing but a crawl for more than half of its length ffs) so NOT going out tonight at all is just fine by me :D
probably help the commander in chief cook some chinese and then dehydrate myself enough to comma out for 10-11 hours of much needed sleep

Oktoberfest is still on this weekend. Tickets are 265 QAR. But what do you get for it? The food included and drinks separate? Or drinks tickets included?

Why bother asking? You won't pay 265 anyway. ;):lol:

I'm having salad tonight. If I remember to eat something. Last of the food in the fridge. But I'm supposed to go for drinks at a nasty sports bar after work today and quite often I don't eat anything afterwards.

I do miss me some proper MSG  there's a couple local Chinese places staffed by actual Chinese but given my track record of getting food poisoning at local restaurants in Doha I'm too afraid to darken their doors.

That's just the entrance and the food, all you can eat buffet and very nice it was. Drinks extra, usual pricey rate  who cares. I think it's best as a shared event, we were a crew of maybe 10. Plenty of possibilities though even on your lonesome.

My bff (best filipina friend) enjoyed it, and the night at the Intercon and made sure to thank me appropriately .

Yeah. That is a problem. I always went to Oktoberfest in DXB and elsewhere with a big group and was properly attired in my leather gear :o (yes I have a lederhosen). And got thrashingly drunk. There's someone I could probably drag into coming with me but just the two of us? Probably charging 50 QAR for the beer? And there won't be pork? The Dubai Oktoberfest was usually around 350-400 but you got a full buffet with lots of glorious pork and a bunch of drinks tickets for full steins of the piss of the day.

I miss having a proper Chinglish so much.
Massive greasy pancake rolls, BBQ spare ribs (dry, sauce separate), char siu pork curry and special fried rice. All with added soy sauce and salt. Mmmmmm!

Champions? yes, nasty sports bar indeed, what to do, it's Doha right. You could order one of their MSG burgers whilst you're there

Avoid Chinese restaurants in Doha would be my advice, along with a whole load of other places, really risky if you're not cooking it yourself or it's not a 5* hotel (and even then...) It's no wonder they have an 'app' for restaurants closed for health violations.

Yep. Champions. Good old Champions ;) I have a membership at the Marriott so I do get 10% discount on food in the bar. It's an odd bar - half the time I go in there's a cluster of sad looking old men sitting at the bar staring morosely at the screens while nursing their beer and fags, then the other half the time I go in it's a rousing crowd.

Mind you, it's nowhere nearly as bad as that awful sports bar at the Radisson Blu  The air in there is absolutely lethal even if no one is smoking.

So far I've been told to avoid all Indian not in a posh hotel, avoid all Chinese not in a posh hotel, avoid all Arabic not in a posh hotel (understandable, I got food poisoning at Turkey Central), avoid all Thai not in a posh hotel, avoid anything that isn't in a posh hotel....except Korean. For some reason there's a bunch of Korean joints in Doha and having tried most of them they're pretty good.

Erm. I wasn't....but I'd had 5 pints before dinner and a beer with so was starving. Then had a couple more after the Chinese, so walked to the hotel very comfortably full.

The problem I have with Chinese is that I stuff myself completely and then a hour later I'm hungry again  that's the apparent downside of MSG.

There's a good Japanese/Korean place Yee Hwa on Al Kinana. Always seems to be full so worthwhile phoning ahead. A, seemingly, new Thai place on Salwa Road, Sawasdee Thai, how original, right hand side heading out of town a few hundred metres after the Midmac roundabout. Not tried that yet but looks clean and will be visiting at some point.

Raddisson Blu

Yee Hwa is my to go place when I don't want to eat in a hotel. The meat they use is actually quite decent quality and I like the table top grills. Not cheap but good value by Doha standards.

I've heard of Sawasdee Thai but I need to meet people who've actually eaten there and survived ;)

I hate to make another unavoidable comparison between Dubai and Doha but for a city of 2+ million people it's amazing how lame the dining scene. There's nothing like the Indian joints of Bur Dubai/Karama, the scores of Thai, the leagues of pretty good Lebanese / Arabic grub, the pretty decent mosque cafeterias that won't kill you with their schawaramas. I suspect it's because the Emiratis actually like food whereas the Qataris are totally indifferent and that reflects itself in the emphasis on food standards and inspections in the UAE compared to Qatar.

Got a text of an offer of a free case of half decent Provence rose with a spend of 2,500 at Al Hamra cellar in RAK. We should score 2 cases if we do the usual spend!

I'll use that as a pretext to get 'im indoors off the couch to go check out all the destruction on Jebel Jais with the new road and zipline and what not (trying not to emulate these people). I know in most houses the mountain trip would be the pretext for the trip to the booze shop but that's not the dynamic in our house!

Leaving party for guy on the project Friday night, expected to be a quiet affair where I'd drop in for a beer or two, deliver a few platitudes then leave.

Instead I'm in work this morning after 3 hours sleep and with an incoming hangover. I have vague recollections of a group Bollywood dancing session at 3 a.m. that I'm sure was heavily captured on everyone's mobile.

Well, my Saturday consisted of hanging around my flat for hours while the so-called "maintenance" crew attempted to unblock a clogged toilet pipe. After faffing around for two hours their solution was to drag in the fire hose from the corridor and use the water pressure to flood out the pipes.

Result: every other toilet in the apartment erupted in a sea of water. Well, I use the term water loosely

After shouting and doing the expat rant at these fine men, they disappeared, returned 10 minutes later with a special set of fitted tubes that they used to promptly unblock the pipes (and which I'd seen them use the last time we had this problem).

You just have to...well...take a deep breath. But I did force them to send a cleaning crew to thoroughly scrub all bathrooms.
