As a small country that doesn't have a history of heavy engineering and indigenous manufacturing expertise, I understand their need for Western experts and systems so I am not sneering at them but calling the missile boat "indigenous" is stretching the truth.

of course if they had done what they originally intended 40 years ago they'd have a functioning further education system and a knowledge economy based on home grown talent. unfortunately the government screwed themselves by making civil service jobs pay double if not more than the private sector whilst working substantially less hours, add in a government built and constantly re enforced sense of entitlement and lack of work ethic and you have boats being built by asians to a swedish desgin. but hey its indigenous.

so yeah we are a bit cynical and its hard not to sneer when faced with the constant media bullshit of indigenous, home grown etc etc as for feeling superior yeah that too but i had an interesting discussion with one of the ac technicians who didn't fix our villa ac a while back and he too feels pretty superior remarking something along the lines that there probably isnt a single emirati in the country who can do what he does.

Which problem? I earn more than I would back home, my disposable income is far higher, my accommodation is far better than it would be back home, as is my car, and I can afford to take my own boat out on diving trips.

Yes, because the natives are not in anyway full of hubris despite the fact fact that their entire state is built on the expertise and labour of 'sneering' foreigners. Indeed the majority of their wealth is from foreigners buying the oil which foreigners found and drilled out for them.

We could all go back home...and most of us will. Unlike the most of the foreigners in our countries who usually get passports and equal protection under the law
