UAE considering viability of building a mountain , to get rain
A US based organization , which currently is responsible for cloud seeding operations in the UAE, is conducting the innitial study on whether building a mountain is practical.
I am going to go out on a ledge here and say this mountain won't happen. Building an artifical mountain would take a galatic f%$kton of concrete.

Experts from the US-based University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR), which manages the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) are in the “detailed modelling study” phase, NCAR scientist and lead researcher Roelof Bruintjes told Arabian Business.
“What we are looking at is basically evaluating the effects on weather through the type of mountain, how high it should be and how the slopes should be,” said Bruintjes. “We will have a report of the first phase this summer as an initial step.”

I thought that was what was being built out of rubbish on the 66 - just cap it with concrete.

I hope they can make it snow there too and turn it into a ski resort.

I always like the claims that cloud seeding was responsible for rain in the UAE, even when the same weather system has already dumped large amounts of rain on neighbouring countries

Do you remember the plans for this, I think by Jebel Hafeet, several years ago. There were visuals produced and there was a link with Brad Pitt who I think was working with the architects.

Yup. It was Jebal Jais - that sometimes sees snow (about one day every five years).

Kinda right and kinda wrong.
There were plans several years ago for turning a section of Jebel Hafit into a ski resort. I know the Contractor who did the investigation and the Consultant who were looking at its 'viability'...
As for Al Jais, I have worked on this project since 2007 / 08 and have seen many many different plans, one of which did discuss skiing, although I'm not sure why as the terrain is completely unsuitable. The main 'plan' for Al Jais, however, is like a national park which would been open to and would promote outdoor activities - hiking, hang gliding etc etc. The main aim for Al Jais, however, is to build a few hotels right up at the peak where the Sheikh currently has a mountain chalet. The road to the top is still under construction and will probably be finalised in 2-3 years.

Jam we travelled up the new road to the top of Jebal Jais recently, the drive is quite spectacular with stops every few hundred metres with toilets and rubbish bins and huge signs detailing a 5,000 AED fine for any rubbish dropped.
I believe there is a shop at the top but most people had their own picnics and even barbecues, a very nice drive and spectacular views from the top towards the sea.
If the road is still under construction will it go even further up then?

The current road goes up to 30km (from the roundabout). The next section goes up to a plateau / flat ridge at about 35.5Km. This is nearly the top. After that a short section (to approx 39Km) is being designed, up to the Sheikh's mountain villa. I've been involved with the design of this final stretch but the section in between, which is currently under construction is being built to our design, but not being supervised by us.
Views are great though. Lets hope people abide by the rubbish related rules.
