went several years ago and have forgotten too much!

Akihabera is the electronics Mecca...

Roppongi is like Soho - vibrant and sleezy in equal parts.

Don't expect taxis to take you anywhere unless it's famous even if you have the address...

Do eat everything - go to a small backstreet tempura bar - though avoid the raw chicken livers I had....

jeez, some people are soooo touchy

OK, OK,. .....Here's some stuff to bear in mind when visiting Japan

A can of Coca-Cola costs more than one dollar US from a vending machine.

Japanese people, in general, can't drive very well.

Restaurants in Japan (including many fast-food places) give you moist towels or wipes before or with your meal.

At many businesses in Japan, they offer alcohol to the employees after six pm.

It is usually mandatory to give a landlord a gift of money of $1,000-$2000 when moving into his apartment building.

On Respect for the Aged Day, tobacco companies will hand out free cigarettes to the elderly outside of train stations and department stores.

The Japanese love corn, sesame seeds, and mayonnaise on their pizza.

There are no 24 hour ATMs in Japan (closed on holidays and many only open during normal bank hours).

Many Japanese teachers think that Japanese parents are lazy.

The green traffic light is called "blue".

Not taking into account the mad trend many Japanese women have for dying their hair red, brown and blonde I suppose of course...

Am wondering why black hair freaks you out - were you abused by a group of Chinese acrobats as a child?

To answer your question I went about 5 years ago to visit a friend who was living there, mad city, great fun.

Harajuku is the Camden (although way wierder) of Tokyo -great place to wander around and walk to Yoyoyogi park, Shinjuku and Shuibuyu are cool and the Fish Market is an experience,... you can explore and find old parts mixed amongst the new or get out of the City and head to Nikko (north i think) or Kamakara and enoshima in the south... All about an hour outside of Tokyo... plus very few english language signs on tube or buses so brush up on your kanji!!

If you get chance head to Kyoto, that is one amazing place and not too far by super fast train...

Fantastic nightlife and food too in Toyko...

Re: Tokyo a go go

I've been five times... love it.

Apart from the fish market, it's hard to give concrete highlights.. there's so much there. Depends what you like. My last visit I spent half the time with Japanese friends, and the other half looking for camera lenses with the missus.

(I did enjoy the great restaurant in Roppongi made up like the House of Flying Daggers from Kill Bill. Lots of fun)

Don't miss the cosplayers in Akihabara...

Make sure someone explains the subway systems to you in English before you try to navigate them...

It's nice having a woman who speaks some Japanese. For Tokyo. And in general ;)

Yes, plan well... and get a decent guide book.

Definitely take him to Akihabara. There are loads of "media" (manga, anime, hentai) shops there as well as the electronics shops.

Harajuku is the place to see cosplayers, especially if you're there over a weekend...

(Pics from my site deleted due to the bored being too stupid to realise they're pictures, just because they don't have .jpg on the end)

If you can spare a day for some out of Tokyo stuff, Matsumoto Castle is great. Also the Fuji Five Lakes are beatuiful. Tokyo itself is just awesome. Shinjuku is a great place for books and cameras - lots of shops there.

Have a great time and as someone said, eat everything!

Cheers,

Ozkingy.

I think a lot of Japanese go for bright coloured hair now.. yellow, pink, red hair etc. They're a pretty wild lot.
