Today I Learned
New idea, just put something you learned today.... Good or bad.
I'll start with two (admittedly one was yesterday but hey ho.

The reason the metro and Tram have windscreen wipers on when they're driverless is because there is a camera inside the "cab" that the operators can see from their control place.
Geiger counters and the like that have to be very sensitive to radiation, have to be made out of stuff called 'Low background steel', steel made before the first atomic bombs were detonated.
All steel after that will be very slightly radioactive.
They use steel from WW1 battleships don't you know.

Re: Today I Learned
Not sure I have learned anything today, yet. I hope I do.
I met a new colleague in Australia if that counts, we had a video call and I will keep in touch and help him with some of the work down under, which is always cool.

Per the article linked by Dubaiexile, new iron made from only iron ore would now be nearly as good as the pre-nuclear recycled scrap.

Today I learned that I really, truly hate the kind of music 17 year olds listen to. Next door neighbours are having a 17th birthday party for their daughter and the DJ may as well be in my lounge room

Re: Today I Learned
My neighbours are members of some sort of Christian sect who home-school their kids. Their eldest must be almost 18 now - and he took up drumming a couple of years ago (how the rest of the family put up wjth the noise, I have no idea! ). His buddies come over and they jam to AC/DC, Zeppelin, Skynyrd etc.
