Things you do HERE, that you would never do THERE.

How about:- today I drove 40 miles to buy booze
And spent around £500
And thought nothing of it

Undertaking (No, you know what i mean, not taking a part time job embalming bodies)

Feeling a bit guilty when buying pork - or even better, feeling fantastic when the (obviously) muslim cashier has to swipe the pig

Come on, there's loads more.

And littlejimmy (who I'm sure isn't little anymore) - you comment on the opposite? Or what you miss?

Walk from one pub to another, not have to get a taxi.
Go to work on a Friday.
Open the car window.
Gesticulate to other drivers.

What I miss? Shisha and iced tea on a nice balmy evening on a terrace somewhere.

I went to a leaving party about 10 years ago and asked the fella what he would miss most about Dubai and he said “drink driving”!! 😮😮😮

This one always made me shake my head. The penalties are much more severe than in the UK, but the drink driving is much worse in the ME.

I was once holed up in an old mate's place cos I was on the bones of my arse. He and his wife saved me - never got to really thank them.

Anyway, how about the availability and easiness of women - I mean, Jeez, if I can score anyone can!

Had a blinder yesterday, bloke pulled out in front of me. Stamped on brakes, hammered the horn. Got a typical wobbly wristed response, which surprised me a bit.
He took the next right into the car garage, so did I. Parked alongside him, he pretty much did everything possible to avoid getting out the car until we'd walked away. If he'd had the balls to look he'd have seen me wetting myself laughing.

Barbecue in December.

Find myself the bewildering source of attention for attractive young guys in a gay venue (which includes a good many more places here than you might think).

Take visitors to shopping centres.

Pay 10 quid for a very mediocre bottle of wine without much thought.

[good thread topic by the way - even though I realise that is reluctantly giving IDK some props...]

Did you miss a zero from that?

Add:

Regularly attend 'leaving parties' for friends.

Go to brunches.

Have to tell people where you're from and what you do for a living immediately upon meeting them.

Write a cheque.

Wear flip flops.

Go to a buffet.

Pay for drinking water.

Disobey "only a fool breaks the 2 second rule".

Ah, I instantly thought restaurant.

It's my Dad's only complaint about Dubai. He enjoys coming here a lot but begrudges spending £70-80 for anything at the bottom end of decent on a wine list.

I never ask this. And rarely answer this properly when I'm asked.

Although I have let it slip out once or twice - the ridicule!

The thing I remember about Dubai is not being able to say the guys ruling the place were corrupt, self-serving bell ends, even when they quite plainly were corrupt, self-serving bell ends.

There are very few countries not run by people who are self-serving bell ends, but at least there are some countries where your kids can grow up free to call out the people running the place for being self-serving bell ends.

For example, I'm not having to worryingly check my V P N was on, and that I didn't accidentally sign off with my real name.

Hmm, just because it's in another language doesn't mean you get a free pass for calling me the equivalent of "f@ggot" on a public forum....

Re: Things you do HERE, that you would never do THERE.

Dunno mate. The rulers of Dubai (Maktoums) do a fabulous job supporting their own people and seeing the transformation of a backwaters city into what it is today. It's an impressive accomplishment. And why they're heavily beloved by the Emirati population. So I wouldn't say your description is apt even if I agree with the frustration of not being able to have open and frank discussions about various issues.

To call out one person on a forum as a 'faggot' isn't cool or funny.

We all disagree over things, we all get frustrated with each other, we all bang heads but we also all help each other, we offer advice, we have a laugh, we have digs and we appear (on the whole) to be fairly decent people on this forum.

Doesn't matter who it is, whether you historically get on with them or not and whether it's thinly veiled or not....being that deliberately nasty is ****ing pathetic.

Thank you all for your support.

Frankly, I'm not personally offended but as Scamp said (a bit better), I don't think it's ok to think that that is ok.

My guess is that IKN thinks he's being funny and there's always a first time for everything. But this isn't it.
