Tea / Coffee

Which do you prefer?
How do you take it?
Do you have a brand preference?
Are you fussy more at home / work / out?

I'm always curious, because people take this shit really seriously.

Here's an example of a great man's (me) preferences:
I prefer coffee....but I do enjoy a tea.
I take it black, no sugar.
Not really any brand preference. I definitely don't need it to be rich, aromatic, Amazonian/Brazilian grown, touched by a virgin and thrice roasted....or anything noddy like that. Just needs to be nice.
Home - I have my pods and the machine, generally double bag it for strength in the big mugs. Work I have instant because it's quick and easy and is for a job, not enjoyment. Out - anything really, apart from Starbucks. I don't like their Americano.

Re: Tea / Coffee

Tea for me, never drink coffee as I don't like the taste.

I buy Liptons Yellow Label Extra Strong, I take it: 2 level sugars and a splash of milk.

I decline tea when offered in meetings out here, as there's a strong possibility of Rainbow milk being used.

When flying I ask if I can put my own milk in (if there are no little cartons of milk).

'Builders' tea for me

Re: Tea / Coffee

Have never drank tea or coffee. Had a try when I was a kid but both taste how I imagine ass does. Coffee also reeks. If I every have my own company I will ban it in public areas.

I do like my women how I imagine i'd like my coffee if I liked coffee though.

Re: Tea / Coffee

More of a coffee person but I can't stand instant coffee. have nespresso machines at home and work. Used to have coffee and tea with 2 sugars. Now down to half a sugar.

Tea needs to be a proper British buliders type tea. None of the Lipton rubbish

Re: Tea / Coffee

Coffee, black no sugar. Usually made in a cafetiere, and usually the same brand as both myself and my wife like the taste. Melitta , not expensive, but nice normal coffee.

When I'm out I also avoid Starbucks, agree with Scamp - their Americano is like dishwater. Prefer Costa .

Tea - not a big fan - only ever drink green tea at work. However, when I'm home, I do like a cuppa with my fish n chips on a Friday night.

Coffee black with no sugar.

Just regular ole Nescafe, or whatever is in the Pot at the gas station when I go on long drives. I don't go to Starbucks or any other Coffee shop.

Re: Tea / Coffee

Cafe Latte. Nice and manly.

I prefer the coffee planet ones over any of the other take away places. At home it's Nescafe granules, milk no sugar. We do have a nepresso machine at home. I don't know how to use it.

Re: Tea / Coffee

Nespresso machines at home and in the office. Black in the office, cappuccino at home. No sugar. Generally buy mixed Nespresso capsules, but just coming to the end of the introductory offer when we bought the machine (which, in effect, made the machine free), so will try some other brands. The convenience is brilliant, used to use a Moka with Illy coffee, but it's a faff and actually not as good as that which the Nespresso machine makes.

Builder's tea, generally with Yorkshire Tea (naturally), bags usually but loose if I can be arsed. Loose is so much better it's almost a different drink. Also like English Breakfast Tea and other stronger varieties; also like Earl Grey with a dash of milk. Don't drink English tea here coz can't get milk that tastes right in it. No sugar.

Moroccan mint tea occasionally, very refreshing but generally too sweet.

Green tea (Costco), bought a big box of individually sealed bags out here, generally have a mug on the go constantly, just top up with hot water.

Rooibos sometimes at home, very calming.

Jasmin after a Chinese.

And NEVER boiling water on the tea, makes it bitter and kills the vitamin C.

Long time ago had a Sri Lankan gf, she made tea with the milk added to the teapot at the beginning. And my gran used to make it with condensed milk. Both :sick::sick::sick:

ps Instant coffee isn't coffee -- they've perfected the aroma, but even with the "best" stuff it's still not coffee. And is mank.

This. Instant coffee isn't coffee and is foul.

Decent proper coffee (I use a cafetiere usually at home) served black no sugar. I also have a cold brew gadget which make it super smooth for iced coffee.

Starbucks is rank and their black coffee invariably tastes burnt. I have no idea why anyone goes there apart from to buy one of their rather nice mugs when in another country.

Teas, also black no sugar. Assam in the morning and Ceylon in the afternoon by preference. Earl Grey tastes and smells like bonfires.

As absolutely you should. It protects the porcelain / bone china.

Re: Tea / Coffee

Prefer coffee but there's always an occasion for tea.

After 3 Nespresso machines over the years, I upgraded to a fully automatic bean-to-cup machine used with Coffee Planet's organic medium roast beans. I prefer a small latte - less milk than coffee - or is that a latte machiatto?

Never understood the people who profess to love coffee that go to Starbucks and order a coffee that's a single espresso shot with about a litre of milk. That's like calling yourself a whisky drinker when you only drink JD & Coke.

I'm a bit of a ponce when it comes to tea, I've got one of those fancy teapots that sit on top of your cup when ready to serve, so generally only buy loose leaf tea.

Any variation of breakfast tea to go with a fried breakfast and green tea after a heavy meal.

Instant does the job at work. I can't be bothered faffing.
Mum makes wonderful cafetiere coffee at home in the UK.

Burnt. That's the taste of Starbucks Americano. Thank you!

Regarding Nespresso machines, I know they're the trendy, cool ones, but they only make espresso size drinks? In hotels before I've hit the 'big cup' option and ended up with a thimble or perhaps double espresso size.

Am I missing something with them or does everyone drink espresso coffee all the time now?

My nespresso machine at home has 3 size settings. Ristretto, Espresso and Lungo. use the lungo setting for my morning cuppa and it makes a big enough drink.

3 size settings on mine, too. Anyway, who wants half a ****ing litre of coffee? Have you been to Italy, Scamp? Ever seen an Italian drinking a coffee any bigger than a teacup?

Who the **** wants to be like an Italian?

I like a large coffee. Doesn't have to be colossal but a full size, larger mug is pleasant and enjoyable.

Maybe I'll investigate further, the machines look cooler than mine.

I always used to have a big mug of coffee, but am now accustomed to a continental-size one rather than an American-size one. Probably same amount of coffee, but with far more concentrated flavour. If now I do have a large one, I'm left wondering what I'm actually drinking because it's so lacking in flavour, aroma and impact.

This morning's (6:30 in the smoking area outside the office):

Pressing the button gives you the amount of coffee someone has programmed that button to dispense.

If you hold the button down it'll keep going until you have the amount of coffee you want and then will be programmed to dispense the same quantity every time you press it until someone else f**ks about with it.

Nice.
I do agree flavour vs volume but there's a middle ground. I like a larger cup so it lasts longer, but sometimes that means I 'double-pod' from my machine to retain strength and gain size.

You're a smart person. Thanks. I might investigate the Nespresso then. I have a Dolce Gusto now and whilst it's nice, they can be quite bland.

Coffee (proper roasted beans!) with cinnamon and pink salt in a big mug.

Brown sugar with coffee if I am out and white sugar with tea.

If I had more free time I would actually roast the beans myself and use a pestle and mortar to grind the beans.

Re: Tea / Coffee

I've always found the Nespresso machines to be a huge let down. Ok, coffee tastes nice, but never gets hot enough and the drinks are way too small. Two things that ruin coffee for me

1 - its too weak
2 - it not hot enough.

Broke the cafetiere I have at home, so had to resort to the stove top Bialetti. Forgot how nice that was.

Cooked tea? Made in a saucepan , loose tea, cardamon, milk and sugar. Simmered to perfection?

I think the modern youth call it chai latte or something metro like that.

Only once in the morning, just like all Paki Truck Drivers take it
Milk, Extra Sweet and Extra Extra tea leaves, it needs to have a kick like a mule :D

Re: Tea / Coffee

Black coffee first thing (no fancy machines or anything - just granules although I used to use a cafeterie)

If I'm out and about, Cappuccino all the way.

Morrocan mint or green tea before bed.

I'd choose Pret if I can pick a place (mainly for their choc croissants!)

Re: Tea / Coffee

Even though you people don't deserve it, I'm going to gift you with a copy and paste of my below the line comment on a newspaper site that I'm proud to say has received several nominations for the "most Guardian comment ever":

Except that Italian coffee is a boring one-dimensional experience hidebound by the same smug parochialism that makes most Italian food good but almost never great. Espresso (and its derivatives) are one way to enjoy coffee but certainly not the only way and, in the view of many dedicated coffee drinkers, definitely not the best way. Unpressurised French press coffe, for example, certainly allows far more expression of the bean's origins and terroir (at the risk of sounding very arsey). Ethiopia is the country where I have enjoyed the most consistently excellent coffee though their much-hyped coffee ceremony is a far more recent and contrived affair than they would have you believe. But again, it is unpressurised brewing delivering a more complex taste to be lingered over. And a deliciously different experience in the highlands than in the East of the country around Harar.

I have enjoyed excellent espresso even from the vending machines in Italian workplaces when the entire office evacuates for a coffee at 11:00. But it lasts for about 12 seconds; so the joy, while intense, is truncated. Hardly the optimal experience, every single day.

Me, I prefer to poise the toppling hour with a long-lasting, complex and subtle drink. And those snobs who insist only on Italian-style espresso: sorry you don't get coffee at all, much in the same way those who insist on only drinking champagne don't really get what wine is all about....

had the Dolce Gusto machines in Singapore because the nespresso machines were totally overpriced there. machines are very poorly manufactured.

One cappucino each morning. Costa mostly. Nurse it for two hours or so.

Never drink regular coffee. Never had plain espresso. Never drink in the afternoons or evening.

Tea when offered. But don't go out of my way to drink it.

carcajou Jun 20th 2017 11:38 pm

Re: Tea / Coffee

I drink a lot of tea. Always black. I do drink the flavoured black varieties and not generic Lipton or Tetley - I usually bring six or seven bags from home with me when I leave the house for work.

Usually an American coffee or two in the morning, and that's all for coffee. Proper American coffee not an "Americano."

My Italian wife, prefers American coffee to espresso.

MAT, your "Most Guardian Comment Ever" - I would suggest Guardian readers also didn't deserve it - is why my $3 "turkey sandwich with mayonnaise and lettuce" ten years ago is now a "free-range Australian turkey with stone ground mustard, wild rocket, and cranberry-orange compote on seven-grain wheat bread" sandwich today for $12.

I appreciate that people like you really do understand and appreciate the differences and nuance between the various varieties and blends. But most people don't - and so if it sounds exotic and upscale, it makes certain young customer segments feel smug and sophisticated, and companies have realised they can charge triple the price for that.
