Taxi automatic fines
Got back from Saudi last night, and in the taxi from the airport to home the driver got fined AED500 five times for "overspeeding", according to the meter display. Taxi driver this morning explained that the first warning comes in red, and if he ignored that then he'd be fined. Last night's driver was a complete f**khead--had to stop him texting while he was driving at 160 through Yas Island--so didn't feel inclined to question him about; not even sure he realised what was happening. Anybody know (or care) if the statement on the meter display is factual? Anything that stops taxis speeding here has got to be a good idea.

Trouble is (and something i've found on the drive to Abu Dhabi) that if you drive at 120 you're effectively driving backwards at 40kph relative to the surrounding traffic flow.
Almost everyone is doing 160+.
So if you restrict taxi's to 120 and let everyone else do as they please, it puts the taxi's in a bit of an awkward situation.
Still....(if it's true) it's a start.

There has been a massive crackdown on speeding in Abu Dhabi.
Not more 120kph on the Corniche, we all travel at a steady 62kph... All the other roads are slower now too. It really seems to be working.

yes all the new silver taxis will be monitored, as it says on the back, its the same as the dubai ones, they can only drive down the main roads at 120 so they are the ones crawling along the main highway, but now there silver cousins can join them in the ride too.

Re: Taxi automatic fines
dont ask me dont know. they are allowed 80 on roads on island and 120 on roads mainland. so if you are driving down 30th, the signed limit is 100 so that means 120 but they are allowed 80 and on mainland the signed limit is 100 so that means 120 and they can go 120 unless you are on the al ain road where the signed limit is 120 which is actually 160 in certain places! logic

Why does an 80 limit mean 100 and a 100 limit mean 120?
Are you referring the the grace that the camera trigger speed gives over and above the speed limit?
For the record I know the ABu D speed cameras go off at 160....but that doesn't mean the speed limit is 160

yes the grace limit. i am referring to the point you made about why people drive on the ad/dxb at 160 this is because they can, because the cameras dont go off until 161!
