I still clearly remember my A Level Economics teacher making the statement that the purpose of newspapers is to inform (this was in the early 70's--and it was probably an old-fashioned view then). Where's it all gone? I don't think there's a single rag out there which doesn't see part of it's remit to side with a political party. I find that really depressing, because the (very obvious) result is that you cannot rely on any newspaper for objective analysis. Apart from Private Eye.
