Anyone been in the last year or so? Just wondering if its safe to travel there, there was a few bombings I think a while back.

Well I am planning on getting married there in a few months, you take your chances with bombings etc.
Never been before but know plenty who have and they recommend the place highly.

North is where the 'troubles' are, although recently stuff has happened in Colombo.
Stick to the south where you will just get constantly hassled to death by the locals trying to sell you whatever they can, within a week you may feel like doing a suicide bombing.

The favourite one from the locals is to tell you 'you have stones in your ears' and he can get them out for a negotiable payment.
It's funny at first, but when the same guy has been following you for 4 1/2 hours, the novelty wears off to the point where you do want to beat him to death with anything you can get your hands on.

My Dad was in Columbo at the End of Jan, stopped here funnily enough on the way back and missed me arriving by about a week. He had no trouble and took his in laws with him!

Go for it. Dirt cheap to get there too because of the low cost carriers (although 4 hours is a big schlep for me in a single aisle plane)
