Some people never learn

Remember those vile and offensive ads from The Circuit Factory using Auschwitz to promote their gym? Well the owner is at it again. This time being a homophobic bigot.

http://www.thenational.ae/news/uae-n...-former-client

Seems he has actually broken UAE law this time, so I hope he learns a lesson. Or is taught one.

And article about legal comment here:

http://www.thenational.ae/news/uae-n...ntroversial-ad

Some comments as to why the ad is supposed to be offensive are not the reasons most of us would cite, but whatever it takes to stop this twat will do for now.

Re: Some people never learn

It is one thing to have a marketing strategy based on pushing the boundaries of decency, but to do so in the UAE is pretty stupid.

He seems like a pretty vapid character in the first place

I find it far more offensive that people call the police when they are offended. To paraphrase Stephen Fry, isn't "I find that offensive!!" little more than a whine.....? So what.

I would suggest that most reasonably minded people find homophobia and using a Nazi labour camp to advertise a gym as rather offensive, as well as gratuitous and insenstive. Even Mr Fry himself.

So, if there was a Mrs Fry who was pretty fit, then he might not be batting for the other side?

I am pretty sure he would be offended by a company using this as their marketing strategy

Bahtatboy Aug 15th 2013 12:57 pm

Re: Some people never learn

I think the point about it being offensive--or not--is irrelevant. I'm in Mr Fry's camp there.

Two things should decide if they should stop / be stopped.

First, is it illegal? And I don't believe in legislating about bad taste. Would he get away with it in UK? Dunno, but that's irrelevant too.

Second, will it damage his business? That's up to him to know.

Otherwise we end up in a situation where someone could be arrested for being in charge of an offensive wife. I think some satirists may have done a sketch about that...

I doubt it. And as a man of integrity, even if he was offended I believe he'd stand by his own advice.

The ad is stupid and distasteful but, without seeing it and only reading the article, it doesn't sound as though it’s homophobic.

Also, the laws which it has apparently broken ‘breaching modesty, promoting sin and even the act of consensual sex’ all sound completely ridiculous.

The best quite from the article is the last one ‘Dubai is a liberal place…’.

Agree that it's utter nonsense and that the guy is a total berk....

The point is, "offensive" is subjective and little more than an a opinion. Offensive is not a call the police scenario in my book and I always find it strange when Western Expats go back a hundred years and join in.....

I've seen it and to say its homophobic is stretching it massively. It's out there but its more funny / silly than offensive.

Funny some of the comments on here from folk who haven't seen the vid or have even met the guy.....

Re: Some people never learn

He has a history of poor taste ads and attention seeking.

Some of us have seen the ads and no I haven't called the police if that is what is being suggested. The owner seems like a vile specimen from everything I know about him and for the record his denials about not approving the holocaust ads are fake.

The reasons cited for legal action are ridiculous, but the whole attitude of the company is that of an arrogant meathead.

I'm being zen about it now, as I assume the people who approve of their unpleasant attitudes will go to the gym so they are all together in one place, away from decent people. Maybe they'll pull a muscle or two.

Just to clairify I definitely wasn't lumping you in with the "call the police" contingent.

Furthermore, as a general rule not linked to this thread, I have always thought places where muppets can congregate are a good thing as it keeps them all in one easily avoidable place. Basildon is a good example.

You really do seem to hate this guy with a passion even though, and correct me if I am wrong, you've never even met him....

I have met him several times and can tell you that you are waaaay off the mark with your comments, however, it seems like you have hard on for him so carry on with your character assassination, which by the way is also a crime in the UAE.

The irony is that liberals espouse giving everyone a voice and then are shocked and offended when those voices do not tally with their own opinions

Some people are not important enough to 'hate witha passion'. You must have experienced that.

Re: Some people never learn

I haven't seen these ads but they don't sound great.

Still, what I do despise is circuit factory wankers giving it stacks non stop when you meet them, even if you don't know them that well. I thought my very placid, laid back mrs was going to hit a woman who asked her not to drink red bull near her because "she feels sick from the smell of all the chemicals".

If that's the average participant at their gym then ****ing let them have it, I would rather they spent their time there than in the public domain.

Re: Some people never learn

I love Circuit Factory. Most of their advertising is great, even the fattist stuff for which they get a lot of stick. It makes a refreshing change from all the 'Love Your Curves' bullshit.

And I don't mind Red Bull if it has vodka in it :D

I wasn't particularly polite after I'd heard some of this stuff, but I'm a believer in letting her stick up for herself if she's annoyed by something.

Disclaimer time: I've got pals who go there and love it and get what they need / want from it. Therefore I'm certain not everyone is a complete plank.

I am not saying that because she is from CF.....I would say that to anybody who commented on something that I was drinking. ;)

Circuit Factory have just sent round an email offering a free week of traning to everybody. This was the covering note:

"We hope this free week of training will mend hearts and bring peace to the families affected by our mesmeric stupidity. With abundant love x"

Most agree that it's offensive. This issue is whether calling the police/authorities is warranted.

I think not using his gym is the best thing I can do to hurt the twat...not that I use gyms - haven't found one with a good bar and ashtrays built into the machines.

I am not sure that they should have used this word! MESMERIC

mesmeric - attracting and holding interest as if by a spell; "read the bedtime story in a hypnotic voice"; "she had a warm mesmeric charm"; "the sheer force of his presence was mesmerizing"; "a spellbinding description of life in ancient Rome"
mesmerizing, spellbinding, hypnotic
attractive - pleasing to the eye or mind especially through beauty or charm; "a remarkably attractive young man"; "an attractive personality"; "attractive cloth

On the plus side, it's still an apology.

I wonder if it'll save them from prosecution / persecution?

It is so not an apology..... This is how a statement and apology goes.... "I am so sorry for my totally crass advert, it was stupid and totally inappropriate..I humbly apologise and offer everybody a free weeks work out in my gym."

I'm in a good mood, post holiday anti-blues you could call it, so I'm trying to see the positives in things.

It was an attempt, so they get credit for that.

Let's not forget Patsy, they're only gym monkeys...the spoken word might not be a strong point, it smacks of Shift F7 (I think that's thesaurus in Word?).

Here is my problem... It is important for me to understand that all of the people who come to me... want to talk about ...their body image, their aims/goals etc.....I never train anybody unless we have a face to face consultation. I have to understand what they want and know that what I do is going to help them.

Well no..actually as I have said over and over, it doesn't seem to be obvious..... I have lots of people who come to me and are amazed that I insist on a face to face consultation before I agree to train them. Apparently there are lots of trainers/gyms who don't actually give a damn about how/what people feel..... feet on treadmills spring to mind.
