Skype quality has been very poor recently. Not sure if its down to Skype or Du.

Anyone have any workable alternatives?

Google hangouts and Google Duo don't seem to work in Dubai.

Skype quality has been poor for years.

There are a couple of alternatives , here in Saudi most of them are blocked, so I do need the use of a VPN

Facebook Messenger video calling works well on the phone ( needs VPN ) and tablet - should also work on the pc.
Tango video calling is also pretty good ( no VPN needed last time ) . Phone and tablet. Not used it for a while though, don't know how good it is these days.
Not tried WhatsApp Messenger, but its available.

If you're just making phone calls to landlines, I think old school apps like fring are still around, as is truphone.

whatsapp voice/video calls are blocked in the UAE. wanted an alternative for Tablet to Tablet video calls. might try next time through VPN but Du internet is slow enough with going through a vpn.

Make sure you do a speed test on your internet..... and not the one they want you to do using the Du website.

I'm on Du and every now and again it drops right the way down and you need to give them a call and start shouting. They will then come out and do 'something' and it will pick right back up again.

I'm now on Du and the speed over the weekends is just horrendous, goodness knows how many others are sharing the "pipe".

But yes, I've seen a drop in the quality of Skype-Skype (Voice) over the last week or so.

Most of the vpns are not working in Abu Dhabi, i tried several even most of the famous one like hotspot, spotflux etc.

I have found lately that Skype calls (video), are not going through, are these being blocked??
