Re: Sat Nat/GPS
sorry folks i've had to resurrect this thread.
So i'm flying home to the UK tomorrow....and will be taking out Du overseas bundle data package which is 1GB for 1 week for AED 200.
In my iphone settings, once i am in the UK do i need to switch on 'mobile data option' to 'roaming on'? Currently it's on 'roaming off'.
Thanks

Data won't work if your roaming is off. have a look at the Navfree app and download the UK map. works really well and you don't need data on

Yes, Roaming on when you are in UK. It will "roam" onto one of the UK networks.
You may need to restart the phone for it to sync with the carrier.
Once your 'package' is used up it will automatically start sucking your balance. Or if your bill is post paid then it could magically inflate it to unfeasably ginormous proportions.

Buy a sim when you're there for 10 - 25 quid. Something like 5 - 15Gb.
If not, you can download the maps in google earth now before you go (use wifi obv). Takes up a bit of memory but once you have them you won't need data.

Never liked the Smartphone or in-car SatNavs. The standalone Garmin GPS is what I use . Much bigger screen and format is much more user friendly.
Paid $280 for mine back in 2015 (was the top of the line model). I go on long drives (several hundred miles to over a thousand) regularly . Don't faff around with getting a cheapo cell or another sim, just get a nice Garmin now . One of the best purchases I ever made. Garmin's cheaper models can be had for 100 pounds.

I like Waze and TBH have no problem using Google Maps either....
Don't see the need for a standalone GPS.
Most cars have them built in now anyway..... well unless you go for the cheapest hire car there is that is.

***** in Cape Town disabled it from the Merc I hired. Hit the button to no avail, couldn't get to it from any menus or anything.
