I have a feeling it will end up like a scene from Misery. What ever you do jonk, don't touch the penguin - He always faces due North.

abuse received and accepted :) it's up to him at the end of the day but I think he will be happy, he will no doubt find younger friends and end up with a flat share in a couple of months.

I don't watch Saturday Night take-away so he is safe there but he will have to suffer Britain's got talent. If he doesn't like that he can spend his time at our gym or in the pool. The lad will get a good start if he accepts my offer. I will get Spugsy to take him to the footy and Sand Dance etc :)

Damn generous, well done BC. Though taking 6k a month off him for rent was a bit steep ;)

I reckon the Blonde Geordie Bird that sings in the Chelsea Ramada Al Barsha's Sports Bar is well fit too.

I'll have to go with Shiva on this one.

It's a terrible package but then again my monthly expenditures did work out to about 7-8,000/month. 4K for rent, 3K for living expenses. This was a few years ago but I'm sure he can stick to the same budget.

The difference is there won't be savings for holidays and splurges.

But if he's dedicated and sees it as a launching pad to better opportunities then why not give it a go?

Flat share: 4,000
Food: 200/week or 800 a month for groceries from Carrefour (strictly pasta/tomato sauce/veggie diet)
Dining out: 100AEd week/400 month only at cheap but tasty Indian and Arabic restaurants

Total = 5200 month. Doable. And there's money left over for a couple drinks on the weekends.

I haven't factored in transportation as I don't know where he's working. But if his office is near the metro and he finds a flatshare near another metro stop, he's set for most of his transportation needs.

He is at a level where the little expenditures can easily add up but if he's careful and finds a really cheap flatshare, such as a maid's room in a Marina flat, that'll cut his rent even more. There's no shame in it and he can do it for a year or two till he leverages into something better paying. Plus it's got to be better than anything in Newcastle.

I lived in Abu Dhabi and Dubai on less than 4k a month from time to time (after accommodation and transport were paid for).

Food: Co-op (in Abu Dhabi, don't know what the ones in Dubai are like, but I guess similar--mainly local produce from the region), veg market. Made lots of curries (nothing out of a jar or can except tinned toms when local toms not available) using fresh spices and local chicken; local eggs (before I decided to buy French free-range); local bread; lots of salad.

Booze / Socialising: Dunno about cheap bars in Dubai, but in AD I could drink for around AED20 per pint, plus a once or twice a month blowout brunch at Coopers for about AED150 (mate had a loyalty card and use to share the discount); also I bought a 1/2 case of French red in the offy near Carrefour near Maqta Bridge for AED100, perfectly quaffable.

Entertainment: Free sports (eg swimming), internet TV, whatever.

Transport: Metro in Dubai; walk in AD, or taxis if too hot.

Dining out: local restaurants (AED50 per meal) eg Indian, Shwarma. But only occassionally: cheap local produce from the supermarkets is cheaper.
