Ramadan

feelings? thoughts? is this year going to be worse than others, judging by some of the comments I have already seen appearing on FB I think it is getting worse. Why can't the UAE be like other Muslim countries and it be business as usual?

(this isn't a Muslim bashing thread before someone tries to say it is)

Ramadan in UAE is easy these days compared to years ago! At one time there was a strictly no alcohol rule in AD. Now it seems to be business as usual in most places except the Beach Hotel who adhere to the old rules.

AD has always been stricter than Dubai, but I have to say I found more places open, and a more business as usual attitude ten years ago than I do now. It feels like an excuse do not work for a month.

I think there's a definite change from the conversations I've had with long time staffers where I work. Many of them describe it not as becoming more hardline, but more the locals becoming lazy and wanting it to be easier – hence the removing of temptation by making it illegal for anyone to eat or drink in public (despite the latter part being especially retarded during the summer months).

Engaged in manual labour in 45+ degrees without water is absolute nonsense. The laziness aspect as you suggest is the overriding factor here.

Labourers/construction workers are not allowed to drink during the work day?

They can and do drink and eat onsite. (In the shipyards I have worked in anyway)

The U.A.E Ramadan is easy , try here in Qatar or K.S.A , full lockdown . Work wise we can't get any major contractual decision made on this project for the next month. Social wise , everything locked down for the full month , they even empty the man made river that runs through the Villagio shopping mall here , no shops open until the afternoons , nothing on a Friday and also death and mayhem on the roads after sunset.

Absolute nonsense in an operational business environment . I'm actually having a long weekend in Dubai during Ramadan , that's how bad it is here.

I'll swop , no problem ;)

I have done the pre ramadan booze run, and will be having parties and lunches around my pool throughout August :)
Most of my clients are away so I have lots of free time on my hands.
OH! What about a BE pool party?:)

I'll be back in the motherland for the back end of it anyway, and watching the footy for the rest so I doubt it'll bother me that much - we have one muslim guy at work who will finish early as well all do full days. Not that bothered really, good for him.

BE'ers half naked?

As most won't meet fully clothed, I'm interested to see what response this suggestion gets!

The thought of the BE blokes in their budgie smugglers is most distressing, even with my strong stomach!!

This is British expats, Patsy, not German expats.

You should be fine. Plenty of pasty white skins with a few burned to a deep purple. Swimming trunks will certainly be of knee length. People will awkardly stand around the pool, in the semi-embarrased state of a half naked Brit, and continually say 'isn't it hot enough for you' and 'cheers' while downing G&Ts and cheap beer.

Eventually at some point someone will be drunk enough to do a bellyflop and splash water on the women in the sun loungers.

Towards the end someone will have a heat stroke.

You'd better have the ambulance on speed dial.

God knows what sort of pool parties you have Darling!!
I have... pink bubbly, bucks fizz, chilled white or red wine, 3 or 4 different brands of beer, spirits if people want them.
I have 4 sofas, a bar with bar stools, 2 dining tables and a coffee table area, sunbeds and umbrellas around the pool, loungy floaty chair things in the pool so there are plenty of places for people to sit..no need to stand awkwardly around the pool! :D
If you want to come and show us your speedo clad body and peeling purple skin do feel free darling..we need a floor show :D

You know that Ethos is wildly speculating as he never gets invited to parties. ;)

Re: Ramadan

I'd come if I could.

It poured rain at the last pool party I went to and we huddled around the aga in the kitchen instead. I did have swimming trunks on....and a wool jumper.

Not quite the same.

But the booze was indeed very good, as were the wasabi flavoured crackers that Millhouse loves so much.

I'm 6'1, 153.5 lbs and damn close to 0% body fat.

I haven't worn speedos since the swimming team when I was about 13.

Am I still invited?

Dude,

I didn't deny myself the joys of junk food, cheese, pastries, sugar, thick juicy steaks, curries etc, subsist on spinach and raw carrots, and get up every day at no later than 6 AM to train, so that people could make fun of my physique.

Now I'm miffed.

Come on man. You've gone soft in the UK. Are you seriously telling me that we have spent the last 3 years exchanging piss takes and I've finally found a weakness in the stiff upper lip?

Book. With names in of women you know. With ticks against some of those names. And the ticks mean "she got my joke"? I smell a smouldering plan that ends with your wife discovering said book and you saying "But you know how witty some people find me and how daft others do, so the ticks only mean that they get my jokes, darling. Look, there's an entry on BE some time back in July last year where its clear that's the case. I'll look it up for you..."
