A 'gay cure' person writes to complain to the Will and Grace scriptwriter about a specific episode. The writer's reply is excellent.

As ever, being too quick to put my prissy-hat on: "Dislikes include...condoms.."??! Hmmmmm...
But it was a delicious way to puncture the silliness of the "ex-gay" nut-jobs and much more effective than a strident po-faced politically correct attempt at a put-down (which is my speciality). The most brilliant thing is that it was the outraged denialists who gave the letter publicity thinking it would reflect badly on the W&G producers.
Of course, it's easy to forget that things were quite a bit different back in 2000 so this was a lot bolder then. Remember, GWB won the presidency in 2004 by motivating his ultra-conservative voter base to get out and vote based on social issues, mainly by stirring up ridiculous fears about gay marriage. Thus on election day he was able to overcome what had been a small Kerry lead in the polls simply because he got more of his core vote out in key states (if only 65,000 votes in Ohio had flipped we would have had President Kerry). It's a lesson that was absorbed very well by the Obama campaign whose voter turnout efforts made a huge contribution to both his wins. The nicest twist is that the gay vote may well have been a critical factor in O's 2012 win. Exit polls indicate a relatively high proportion of self-identified LGBT and "never married" voters this time around and its clear that many were motivated by O's support for gay marriage. Obama got over 75% of the gay vote - which begs the question, what the hell were the others thinking?? - but split the straight vote about equally with Rmoney.
As daft as the show was, and it really did go off the boil in the last couple of seasons, as a big hit network TV show Will & Grace probably made a real contribution to the significant improvement in the acceptance of LGBT equality in the last 10 years. So two cheers for them!
