Do not do it.
Three British 'planespotters' arrested in UAE for breaching 'national security' - Middle East - World - The Independent
Some people should not be allowed out on their own - certainly not abroad !

Why are the Independent running this story again? It was first reported in March by many UK and local newspapers. More anti-UAE propoganda?

Apparently they were still held under an extension to their original arrest, that extention was up on Sunday, but I can't find out any further after this article from April 4th.

They were still in jail, as of early last week... An article in The National mentioned something about one of them being quite ill by now & has lost 1/4 of his body weight - or something like that.

There was a case a few years back in Greece. Looney Brit plane-spotters could not understand why Greek Military Intelligence objected to someone taking pics of their air defences. At that time Greece and Turkey were shooting at each other in the Aegean.
Another contingent of Daft Anglos were arrested in a railway station near the Serbian-Croatian border. They were writing down loco numbers in notebooks.
I am surprised that more of these enthusiasts do not end up on trial for espionage. Pity the poor consular official who has to explain what has been going on to baffled locals.
