Re: Photography courses in Dubai
Check what's on at DUCTAC & The Shelter. There's a beginners SLR course at The Shelter on 27th November run by an excellent photographer.

A Nikon D5000 - it does everything I need and more - been too bloody hot to get out and use it but very nice now so need to get out and about. I need some photos for my apartment and am convinced I can take better than I can buy...

There is some great stuff out there. My husband represents a number of photographers so take a look at some of the images on this old site to see some of the images. We have quite a few in stock still...

If planning on hanging your own work, it's worth getting it professionally printed and framed too.

Re: Photography courses in Dubai
I've just bought a Canon PowerShot G12, as an alternative to lugging my DSLR around. Used it in Vienna last week, and it is superb. I'm a rangefinder fan, and wanted, in essence, a modern version. I have to wear reading glasses, and so one of the requirements was a viewfinder with a dioptre control, which the G12 has. However, with the articulated viewfinder I took a lot of shots at waist level, similar to the Rollei 6x6 which I have.
The functionality and ease of use are really excellent, with pretty much the same functionality as a DSLR (in fact, greater than my 3 year-old model), but its small enough to carry easily.
I was tempted by the 4/3 models, but they're bigger, don't have viewfinders (except as options which are either expensive and/or make them less easy to carry and use discreetly), and I can't remember the last time I printed anything bigger than A4 so image quality is OK with the G12. The only thing I'd have preferred is a faster lens...
If anyone's interested, see the review:

ps Don't be fooled into thinking its "just a compact"--I have pretty much everything from a technical view camera, a couple of medium formats plus various 35mm's (including a Nicca IIIS rangefinder with Nikkor f1.4 lens, which is pretty much up there with a Leica), and the G12 is just brilliant.
