So, they start in the next couple of days.
As we are UAE residents I hope you all wish our team good luck in Rio, such as Victor Scvortov in the Judo.

Speak for yourself, I'm in Doha and I'm genuinely hoping for Mutaz Barshim to do well in the high jump. Not only was he actually born in Doha (a rarity amongst the various sports teams here), but he seems to be a genuinely nice guy too.

Re: The Olympics Thread
So I googled Victor Scvortov.
He's Moldovan.
How can he compete on the UAE team? What are the requirements? One would think you'd need citizenship of the country you're competing for?

Yes, even Sepp Blatter thought they were pushing their luck a bit much. Just let that one sink in a minute

Re: The Olympics Thread
heard on the radio the US Olympic Committee will sue if brands/companies use hashtags or images from Rio games ie
#Rio2016
#TeamUSA
#Olympic
#Olympian
#Go for the gold’
I thought hashtags were public?

Is it just me or is anyone else not in the slightest bothered about the Olympics now?

Outside of athletes its not even the pinnacle of the sport.
Football, some weird under 23 rule
Boxing, Amateurs
Basketball, USA will win
Rugby 7s will just be like every other 7s T

Re: The Olympics Thread
The problem with the Olympics is that's there's too much going on. And we already live in a world of 24-7 sports media where even minor sports get programming time on obscure channels.
It's hard to develop a keen interest in the Olympic games. We already have the WC for football. We have the Rugby 7s. With those, they are one sport only and have teams you can follow and support.

Re: The Olympics Thread
It's about sponsors not being allowed to tweet certain words relating to Olympics. It's just pure control so the Olympic actual sponsors don't get upset with other brands hijacking the glory of their paid athletes.

Re: The Olympics Thread
I would be excited to watch loads of it if it weren't for the time difference - loads of the evening events will be happening when I'm on the way to work in the morning. Makes it tricky to watch.
