Olympics 2016 - Doha eliminated
Bit of a surprise....... technically a very strong bid by all accounts but some on the IOC simply felt it was too small a city to host the tournament. Also Doha proposed an October tournament (which would clash with loads of stuff in Europe and North America). Much of it was also rumoured to be held indoors....
The conspiracy theories are already doing the rounds though - Dubai 'persuaded' the committee that they would have a stronger bid for 2020, and since the Games will come to the Arab world eventually, and having missed out on Formula One to Bahrain and Ab Dab, Dubai was determined not to miss out on The Next Big Thing.
Dubai of course wanted to be the FIRST Arab city to host - so a word in the right ears......

I understand that local government have already been greasing the well oiled IOC machine for a number of years with 2020 in mind.
It could already be a done deal...

Not really a surprise, Doha proved with the Asian games that it was not close to being ready to host the Olympics.
It was a bit of a shambles - they didn't even have enough accomodation for the teams - and this was an event 10 times smaller than the Olympics with sparse crowds (the stadiums were almost empty for most of the event).
The infrastructure is just not there, and the place is just too small to hold an Olympics.
Likewise, Dubai cannot make a serious bid until it proves it can solves its infrastructure problems (and they also have to persuade the IOC to hold the games in October or November)
As for F1, there's an interesting story about why Dubai didn't get a GP.

To Bahrain.
Yes, I think its in his autobiography.
Basically Ecclestone was on the tarmac at Dubai airport ready to discuss the Dubai GP at their spanking new facility at the autodrome, was left waiting for hours and told his pilot to fly to Bahrain.
Abu Dhabi got it because they own a bit of Ferrari
