I watched it - I think it is actually a credit to liberal America, and Columbia in particular, that they allowed Ahmedinajad a platform. The requested, and granted, invitation to allow Columbia faculty & students to visit Iranian universities is interesting - is it a genuine attempt at opening dialogue & fostering friendships amongst the intellectucal elite of the two nations, and if not, what does it signify?

It might be a start that they recognise that their enemies do, in fact, have an intellectual elite in the first place... to watch some of the FOX reporting pre-Iraq invasion you'd think that the country was a place of hunter-gatherers.

Sadly the elite is not what it used to be. The revolution that overthrew the Shah began with the Student's unions, and was a democracy movement. They formed a very foolish co-alition with the Shia'ah right, only to find themselves victims of a witch-hunt after the Shah was deposed. Many brilliant young Iranians were forced to flee the country at this time. This makes it a real shame because not so long ago the Iranian universities rivalled the Indian ones in terms of being centres of innovative thought in the East - the Iranian people do have a very rich intellectual tradition and a sophisticated culture.

In a sense, the USA would have been far better advised to have chosen Iran rather than Iraq as a target to overthrow a despot and install democracy - Iran is a country that is well positioned to undergo a rennaissance.
