I am sick and tired of the corrupt and covert relationships between the press police and politicians in the UK. Cant wait to put it all behind me - coming to the Middle East will be a breath of fresh air

Sean Hoare, one of the 1st NoTW journalists to blow the lid on the hacking scandal and state that Andy Coulson (P.M. Cameroon's Communications Director) has been found dead at his apartment.
Rather convienent for Coulson that one of his chief accusers is now dead.

While I know there is the possibility of natural causes or self inflicted damage, the fact that this scandal goes all the way to the upper eschelons of UK society will naturally raise suspisions. Just like with Dr. Kelly's death.

London (CNN) -- One of the first journalists to go on the record and allege phone hacking at News of the World was found dead Monday, the British Press Association said.
Sean Hoare, a former News of the World employee who said Andy Coulson "encouraged" phone-hacking, "was discovered at his home in Watford, Hertfordshire, after concerns were raised about his whereabouts," the press association said.
"The death is being treated as 'unexplained, but not thought to be suspicious,' " the report quoted Hertfordshire police as saying.

Hit the nail on the head in my opinion, the discomfort we feel is one about the relationship between government and people.
The class which has the means of material production at its disposal, has control at the same time over the means of mental production - Karl Marx (The German Ideology)
Capitalism is an economic system guarded and maintained by its political power and dominance. Western democracy is only a form of that politics where close cooperation between government, media and police controls public opinion in favour of that democracy which is nothing but democracy for the rich and dictatorship for the rest of society. The recent Murdoch scandal clearly shows the structure of that politics. Nearly all governments in the UK have been facilitating the media empire’s control of the news/cover-up, in return for the support they get from them. Corruption, bribery, political imprisonment and assassination are just the stories of the failure of a daily practice that that democracy implements. People must believe in the system without the need for a dictator such as Mubarak. It is no surprise to see so many people in the UK still strongly believe that they live in a democracy. And this is when the majority do not have slightest involvement in things which affect their lives. Austerity measures, wars and anti-people politics and priorities are in full swing with no trace of people and no control to force the politicians and the managers of society to be accountable.
It is indeed an excellent opportunity for the ordinary to learn the reality and extend their understanding of how this government and the previous ones have been able to do whatever they wanted for their own benefit and their benefactors in the businesses against the will of the people. Tens of inquiries are arranged by them, none of which will have any effect to clear up the system of crimes; they are only noises to show to the public their ability to get on with their business as usual even though everybody can see that many honest individuals in this country can do better than the bunch of privileged which inherently own the politics.
We are talking about the independent media, but that media cannot flourish in the absence of a serious social movement. This is because as long as the media is financed by the corporation it will served their system of economy, capitalism. So again the struggle to create an independent media is interlinked with the struggle against the cuts and unfair and regressive policies of this government. With or without Murdoch’s empire the media is there to remain and to protect capitalism. People need their own media and a platform based on which the real criminals in this country and at the top of society are targeted with the goal to topple them, strip them from the power they have never deserved.

Just watching Brooks being "interviewed" by MPs. Now while I am proud (and I rarely use that word) of how serious matters are debated and handled by us Brits, I've seen harsher "interviews" in a ****ing kindergarten. I'm quite expecting one of the MPs to offer her a cup of tea and a plate of scones with homemade ****ing jam.

It gets worse:
"Were there any occasions when a Prime Minister instructed you not to print a story?"
"No, I can't remember any such occasion."
Can't remember? Can't remember?
That's like Bahtatgirl asking me "Have you had any threesomes with blonde Russian whores while you've been in Abu Dhabi?" "No, I can't remember doing that." "OK darling, another cup of tea and a scone?"

After Rupert Murdoch had finished giving evidence, committee chair John Whittingdale said: 'I would like to apologise gain for the wholly unacceptable treatment you received from a member of the public.'
And Mrs Mensch praised Mr Murdoch's 'immense courage at having seen this session through despite the common assault that just happened to you'.

Yeah repeated apologizing and calling Murdock courageous for a pie in the face.
The whole thing is soo surreal when you compare the umbrage resulting from a pie in the face to what Murdock and his company has done.

My understanding of all this is limited as I have not read every news article and am not as informed on all the goings on, Just playing devils advocate however and giving my 10 pence worth. Whilst i agree that the NOTW have crossed many lines, have they not over the years exposed various stories that led to arrests all in the public interest- paedophile rings, corrupt politicians etc all passed over to the police which has led to arrests and exposure of less desirable activities? and isnt it the public interest in celebrity gossip that has driven them to cross into the private lives of celebrities. If there was no demand for it then they would be looking for proper news stories rather than whos shagging who.
Perhaps Joe Public should have a look at their insatiable appetite for celebrity gossip and at the monster they have created. Whilst i do not condone the invasion of privacy on the likes of Millie Dowlers family and the clear boundaries that have been grossly crossed and soldiers families who have lost dear ones, it goes on whether its being done by news reporters or big brother. In the Uk look at all the gossip mags, magazines paying cash for any unworthy story involving the latest z lister. The shelves are full of it- each mag and paper trying to pip each other with more detail, more grit, more sordid details and further invasions of privacy. But this is what the public buys. If there was no demand there would be no requirement for the stories- no new lows that the press have sunk to. Whilst everyone is happy to stand up and say how appauled they are and how underhand and corrupt this all is do they not see that the general public has driven this method of undercover reporting. I agree there has been some very grave errors of judgement made, I also think undercover journalism is an essential part of news reporting.
As for the politicians, police and press, the police have relied on the press for years to delve into stories that they cant get past the red tape on. The press can take the less legitimate methods that police would not be able to submit in court. They are all in bed with each other and this isnt anything new. Anyway please feel free to shoot me down as a stupid girl who doesnt know what she is talking about.

Christopher Hitchens has a dig at everyone.
I suppose as conscious consumers, the choice is in our hands. Rupert Murdoch has been successful at what he does because he has appealed to the public, the consumer. It really highlights how simple we are most of the time. Is this voyeurism intrinsic to human nature? I speak with my wallet, the only power I really have. I have given up on our dear leaders a long time ago. But it's interesting it has to get this bad before any action is taken.
Anyway, I continue to follow this story with great interest. I have no sympathy for Rupert Murdoch or any of his minions. But at the same time, several people are being lynched in the media which have yet to be proven guilty. Another typical failure of the media to report with a balanced view. I guess the bankers are happy now, no longer the most hated in the City.

And it wasn't the NotW that exposed that - it was the dear old Daily Nazigraf........

In all seriousness though if you haven't already, watch the 1976 film Network, very forward thinking for the time.
