New sin tax.....
Just seen that the 100% sin tax on booze is starting in mid June in Oman - wtf?!?!
Is this actually going to double the cost of alcohol in hotels and bars, as it’s already fairly steep! Ramadan has been painful for us new arrivals and this is not the glorious ending we were hoping for!!

From my recent experiences spending time back in Doha where they did much the same (How do they all get the same ideas at once?) Prices in bars and hotels increased a bit, no where near 100%, its' just reduced their thievery a bit. Price in the QDF shop much steeper increase so I guess drinkers in Doha are now paying Qatar Airways carbon tax for them.

Popped into the A&E next to the Golden Tulip this morning and were told that shop prices would double on 15th June. Stupid, stupid. That’s halving the amount that people can buy according to their permitted licence allowance.

When we lived in Oman there was a big problem of pissed up Omanis having road accidents. The tax is partly to stop this an partly to improve Govt income. Remember you could have higher income tax and lower booze tax ♀️

It’s not going to stop “pissed up Omanis” from having road accidents. If they want to drink they will always find a way. And it’s not going to improve Govt income. Qatar tried this months ago and the revenue from alcohol sales dropped by 47% - they’re now scrambling to find a way to reverse the tax without losing face.
