Yes but why 'refuse' to ler her sister live in the barracks to look after the child?

I suspect there's more to this than we realise, but until the Army gets an exemption (by government) to the sexual equality legislation, or whatever this was, cases like this will keep occurring.

the half-sister wasnt allowed to live in the barracks because she didnt meet immigration requirements. normally you can only bring in a relative if they are your dependant. that was clearly not the case here

when I was doing a training scheme with a major city law firm they had a case where a woman was employed by a University to provide specialised IT support. Because of the nature of the work she was told it had to be done on site and during college hours.

as she was the best candidate she was offered and took the job. Before she started she demanded to work flexible hours and from home as she had children. they refused and she sued them! I don't know what the outcome was but I wouldnt be surprised if she won.

While I agree that you don't join the Army and have a child without knowing you won't be around to look after it, but the Army could have helped bring her sister to look after her daughter.

However the idea of paying her 100grand is just silly - she could have applied for a different posting with stable hours. The Army has a lot of admin and logistics staff...

She should be offered another position in the Army and not given any compensation.

Can happen with Single Dad's too, as nowadays there are quite a few of them around.

I think the military needs to adjust to changes in status from the old days.
Otherwise it will leave itself wide open to abuse.

Call me old fashioned but I disagree, the purpose of the army is to serve queen and country by joining you put yourselves and your family in second place. If you choose to join the army you know you are not choosing an family friendly lifestyle- Whether you are single or married male or female it is not an easy career to have children in.

Of course its impractial- its the army!

Its also a bit impractical if your husband dies in Iraq, however you risk your life if you choose the army as your career. How many women (and now men) wish their partners weren't serving in these countries on the front line, and of course they all wish for a safe return, and of course I am sure most parents wish their children don't choose to serve in the army, however those that do put their country first and their lives second.

It's not about being a robot its about putting something before your own personal requirements.

In my opinion if your choose to serve or marry someone in the services you know what you are getting yourself into, I have a huge ammount of respect for those who choose to put their lives at risk for their country however they must be incredibly naive if they think the services will work around their family lives.

Sure, I am with you on that one. But it seems a lot of other people are not.
See, my mantra is "deal with what you have". Apparently there are a lot of users and abusers in this world. So we (in this case the military)need to find a way to get what we need without sacrificing too much . I think adapting is the easiest way to go.
But of course, I am as far from being a military person as someone could be...although, some answer me "Jawohl mein General"...lol
