Mandatory military service for Emiratis

Compulsory for between nine months and two years for the boys, but optional for girls. I wonder if they'll be made to turn up more often than the regular forces who trainers tell me often take time off whenever they feel like it, usually because " my uncle asked me to visit' and other such ridiculous reasons. |

For defence of the borders, WTF? Apart from the 'troubles' in Lebanon, Syria, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait etc. when has anyone threatened the UAE?

slightly dated but highly informative article here.
this is pretty much what trainer friends here say about the local forces and why national service wont make much if any difference |
