What you call 'stench' is probably mustard oil, used by many north Indian people particularly Bengalis. It is excreted through the pores of the skin. Objectionable to many southerners also.
Cumin doesn't really have a particular smell, just taste. I bung it in everything I cook Western or Indian instead of pepper, less sharp.

the stench i smell in the office often is plain old B/O. Lack of personal hygiene and a need to use anti-bacterial soap

It tastes nothing like pepper.

I can't imagine my old nan putting some Cumin on her Shepherd's pie in lieu of pepper.

nothing wrong with cumin....it's an awesome 'spice'....I usually put some in when I'm making rice.

it's ok in small doses. I use it in daal. But eat too much and it pours straight out of your skin.

You don't sprinkle it on , you use it when frying the base---onions etc.
