Inflation
How come everything seems to have risen in price by at least 20% in the last 12 months, even my Time Out magazine. Cheese has almost doubled in price too. Yesterday we paid 20% more for our daughter's medical treatment (poor Jasmine has tonsilitis). Today I learn from Gulf News that the price of Global Village is going to rise by 100% from last year. How on earth can hard working folk afford to pay the massive sum of AED10 to gain entry?
Before BC or anybody else complains, I am only joking about the entry fee being too much, but maybe a poor family with 4-5 kids will struggle?

Re: Inflation
It does seem a bit of a joke lately. The economy is slowing down, the AED is stronger against the pound and European currencies yet imported goods from these areas have risen.
Bunch of crooks one and all.

Re: Inflation
But you are right, given the Dhiram's strength against the pound, things should be getting cheaper, not dearer.

Yeah, I paid the equivalent of 3 quid for a cucumber the other day in Spinneys. Ridiculous. I guess the way to go is to buy locally-produced produce.

Re: Inflation
best one I've found so far is Organix brand cereal bars for babies in our local supermarket - 54 AED for, wait for it 6 bars! Nearly a tenner whereas in the uk it's about £2.
Cheaper to make my own...
Saying that, food prices have risen by 10-20% in the Uk too over the past year or so.

Re: Inflation
I have really cut down on food shopping, getting too expensive for the luxury stuff. We keep to basics, meat and veg with the odd treat thrown in.

Time to start making those bread puddings again! Does anyone know if you can get mixed spice here, or do you have to make up your own?

Here in the Magic Kingdom, there are amazing farms growing everything from tomatoes to turnips. The dairy products are superb (the farms are spotless), and the cattle eevntually become very tasty meat indeed.

..still prefer vegie produce from Holland or Australia than from Middle East countries...don't like the idea of watering with recycled but treated sewage effluent !!

It's out of control. When I first joined British Expats, a forum for, erm, British Expats, it was free! Now....
