How Much do you Spend?

Rent 5250 per month
Taxis 1750 a month
food 600-1000 a month
entertainment- cinema going out- 500
trainer 1700 a month
bills- phone/du/dewa- 1000 a month

I try to keep my monthly outgoings at under 11k- 12 maximum.

Thats basically it. I don't go clothes shopping much but when I do I have a blow out- maybe 3-5k every 4 months or so.

Having said that I have only recently finished decorating my apartment but a l of that will come home with me so long term investments

Travel acorss the year budgeted at 15-20K including spending money.

Bugger. I'm in LH's category, but then that's only on me (family's in the UK). If I included what my family costs, then it'd be about AED 60k.

we spend less than 10k a month, nothing to be ashamed about :) supermarket is less than 500 a week, petrol, eating out, 1500 a week at the most

I'm not far off him, I only just tipped into the next box!

That said, one car is owned - the other almost owned. If I was renting them I'd be in for another 10k / month on leasing.

No, no: I have no shame about spending as little as possible, its the shame of being in the same category of anything as LH, especially where money's concerned.

point taken, but I can't see how people spend 20k a month? after housing, dewa, schooling etc

I bet there's a fair few expats who actually buy from the expensive shops in the malls rather than feigning disinterest like me. Previous colleague bought two GBP5k watches in a year (for himself), and his wife actually had a little device (a refractometer?) which she used in shops to tests whether the diamonds were genuine, so god knows how much they spent on lumps of rock. 20k a month on average would be quite easy if you're of that mindset.

we pay for one car, still don't spend 15k

well you always find the odd tosser :rofl: there used to many like that, not so many these days though, people are watching their money. Look how well all these discount sites are doing, everyone is out to save money

If I had no interest in saving any money wotsoever and was just here for the craik then Id spend a fair bit on clothes each month- I used to shop for a living so Im pretty good at it! I'd go travelling as much as possible, buy 'stuff' for the kids and family at home (I suffer from guilt purchases), get a nice car, maybe live somewhere else- downtown maybe, go out more often. 20K could go easily.

We now get £2k into the bank here each month, so whatever that converts to when it gets transfered is what we will live on. That will include utilities, which we budget 1,000dhs for. That is for 4 of us.

I know someone who goes back to see most home games of his premiership club. That has to be costly.

i think i'm missing something here...what does it matter who saves/spends what, unless you are comparing lifestyle with lifestyle, it's irrelevant...

FFS BC!!! Why does somebody have to be a "tosser" just because they like, and can afford, to buy nice things from high end stores? I would rather save my money and buy a pair of Louboutins or a good handbag than shop in some of the high street stores for things that don't last 2 weeks.

I think it's time to reassess our budget. I'm not letting the hardworking other half see this. (Though i do bring in a few pennies myself).

We own one car and one year off paying the other one, but that only affects the budget by 3.5k. Restaurants, parties and entertaining take a big chunk as does holiday accommodation.

Other than going to Jordan next month, i will attempt a 10k month. Blimey, can't believe i wrote that...

Edited to say, please don't think of me as a nob just someone who is useless with money. It does drive my husband barmy.

exactly...and the size of the family and ages...there is no way I could foodshop for 500 dhs a week with 2 hungry teenagers and their friends attacking the fridge/cupboards every waking moment...1 trolley will be around 800 dhs and will only last me 2/3 days...

Really? Sob. Didn't realise children ate so much! Our average trolley is 250 dhs and lasts 7-8 days (for two people).

Actually I'm in the second category thanks primarily to my weekly massages, daily bottle of wine and extortionate DEWA bills. This month it was well over Dhs1,800...:eek:

How does anyone know how much they spend each month? Or am I missing something?

It's my fault, i thought through the answer but not the question. I find it expensive living here and rather than ask people in real life where it felt that it would be awkward, i thought it'd be fine on here. On reflection it is a crass question but i got caught up in the spirit of the save thread and was curious.

You must be able to do a rough calculation (say for last year):

Total annual remuneration
Less how much you saved / invested
Less your annual rent
Less an estimate of how much you spend each month (x 12) on the other things
= your annual "spend"
