First time I am reading about this coffee called Kopi Luwak, which is a coffee made from beans that are sourced from Civet Cat excrement. Stuff is allegedly selling for 60 pounds a cup. Harrods is according to the article selling it.

It is claimed as excrement from " wild " civets but really the rich people in the West and elsewhere buying it can't be that naieve to think that animals aren't being farmed , especially considering the economies of the developing world.

I doubt they even consider its origins unfortunately and I'd suspect there is some random eu rule that allows it to be called wild as long as the animals were originally wild regardless of current confinement

The civets eat the coffee beans, which pass undigested through their bodies - right? The coffee isn't actually made from civet shit??

So - why can't they simply harvest the beans in their original form (like regular coffee production), before they get eaten by civets?

[I assume I'm missing a key point].

You never seen the Jack Nicholson film 'The Bucket List'.

Allegedly the civets will only eat the mature beans, which are supposed to be the best. Then their bodies digestive system goes to work on it as it passes through the digestive tract, making them extra tasty.

Yeah an uppity NY friend of mine has a coffee house and kept on bragging on and on about its taste etc
So one day I told him his breath stank and it was probably because of the cat-crap in his coffee
Needless to say we rarely talk now

To me it just sounds like marketing ploy and placebo effect. I would compare it below Penn & Teller's video on how bottled water is bullshit marketing.

No doubt there is a taste difference but then is it really a better taste thant he umpteen other coffee varieties out there; some people may genuinely like the taste but I suspect for most it is like with the bottled water.

My sister bought me some of this, a smallish bag, 20 quid or something.

Was lovely, but couldn't hep thinking of the Austin Powers scene...

Suza is an unknown quantity at this point
Default Re: How exotic coffee fosters animal cruelty.

I went to a farm in Indonesia were this was made. The animals are kept in a large cages. This place I visited was a family business. The coffee did taste great, albeit really expensive.

Surely, battery caged chickens farm, cattle producing farms, fish farms and the like all play their part in animal cruelty.

I'm not a vegetarian or anything.

I despise the taste and smell of coffee and so I doubt this would light up my life.

Essentially its just a legalised drug.

I'll happily eat coffee beans and then get one of my Jinglies to sift through my sloppy turds to dig out the beans if you will pay 20 quid a small bag

I promise to pay my jingly a going rate

They have outlawed jinglies in Jingly land from hand sifting shit from non flushing toilets so I reckon there could be a market and a ready labour source

On my way to being the next Mr Tata I reckon

Right form an orderly line, would you like curry flavoured coffee beans or Wagu flavoured beans
