Re: Happy Birthday Meow
Thanks folks. Spend a couple of days in Hatta chilling, using up a free stay & food voucher that I won some time ago.
That Heritage Village is fantastically shite! We drove to Kalba afterwards on some 'interesting' back roads where we found loads of what appeared to be wild donkeys and some unusual settlements. Found a rather desolate border crossing that was not in use, but manned by one very bored soldier. It was obviously set up for quite a lot of traffic, but hasn't been used in years. The soldier said we could 'bypass' it by offroading to get to Oman which seemed more than a little illegal so we declined.

You can also turn right in Huwaylat (I'm guessing you went straight through and picked up the Sharjah-Kalba road eventually - the scenic one through the mountains with the tunnel, though I'm baffled where that border point would have been), drive down through the rather lush wadi to the military base, then turn left and follow the track along by the border fence to eventually link up with a road just outside Kalba. I don't know if it's illegal exactly but it's fun to pretend it might be with visitors in the car and have them keep their eyes peeled for miliatary vehicles just in case!
There are some great road signs saying 'dangerous curves' so I have some photos of me posing next to them

That's exactly where we turned right (left takes you eventually to Sharjah/Kalba road) and it ends with this border crossing. Part of the drive is along the border fence, via lots of wadis, but then you get to the border crossing. We were told that the track takes you across the border and it wasn't a safe road. Rather entertaining really.

I guess the Dangerous Curves signs are more appropriate than Humps Ahead...
